Obituaries for the Hamburg, Eden, Angola areas for week of Oct. 11, 2012

Valla Roy

A memorial service was held on Friday (Oct. 5) from the John J. Kaczor Funeral Home for Valla N. (Hunt) Roy, of Blasdell, who died on Wednesday, October 3, 2012.

She is survived by her husband, Mel Roy; children, Kelly (Steve), Peter (Nicole) and Eric (Kim) Udrea; mother, Sydney (Patis) Hunt; 16 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and additional family and friends.

She was predeceased by her father, Kenneth Hunt; and brother, Darryl (Cynthia) Hunt.

Jean Steffen

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 3 p.m. from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Eden for Jean E. (Gehl) Steffen, who died on Sunday, September 30, 2012.

She is survived by her children, Michael (late Mary) and Bradley (Laurel) Steffen; grandchildren, Amy, Adam, Sam and Jacob; and several great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Steffen; and daughter, Christine (Joseph) Sibiga.

Mrs. Steffen was most at home with the boys working in the garage, coffee in the pot, jokes and stories in the living room, a quilt in her lap and cookies and cakes in the kitchen.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Buffalo.

Carol Santiago

Funeral services were held on Thursday (Oct. 4) from a family residence on the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation for Carol (Huff) Santiago, 71, of the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation, who died on Monday, October 1, 2012.

She is survived by her children, Raymond (Holly), Angel (Lisa) Jr., Antonio, David (Sandy), John (Alyssa) and Marguerita (Curtis) Santiago; siblings, Francis Inabinet, Kelly Steeprock and James, Geraldine and Gloria Huff; daughter-in-law, Cindy Santiago; the Jeakle family; and 20 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Angel R. Santiago; and son, Brian Santiago.

Mrs. Santiago was a member of the Heron Clan.

She was buried in Snow Cemetery.

Arrangements were made through the Wentland Funeral Home.

Aaron Thompson

Funeral services were held on Saturday (Oct. 6) from a family residence on the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation for Aaron Kelvin Howard Thompson, 18 days old, of the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation, who died on Friday, October 5, 2012.

He is survived by his parents, Brian and Ariane (Larvie) Thompson; siblings, Ryan, Zeenna and Aleez; and grandparents, Leona Martin, Roy Henry and Roberta Huff.

Arrangements were made through the Wentland Funeral Home.

Elsie Bock

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday (Oct. 10) from St. Francis of Assisi Church for Elsie (Zenio) Bock, of Hamburg, who died on Saturday, October 6, 2012.

She is survived by her children, Nancy (Glenn) Schoonmaker and David (Patty) and John (Mary) Blood; grandchildren, Sara (Anthony) Frizalone, Matthew Schoonmaker, Lauren (Shaun) White, Jennifer (Thomas) Makin and Eric, Ann Marie and Kimberly Blood; and great-grandchildren, Ava Schoonmaker and Anthony Joseph Frizalone.

She was predeceased by her husbands, Ditmar Bock and Raymond A. Blood; daughter, Christine Rice; parents, Andrew and Eva Zenio; and siblings, Helen and John Zenio.

Fred Kokot

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday (Oct. 6) from Holy Trinity Polish National Church for Fred Kokot, of Hamburg, who died on Wednesday, October 3, 2012.

He is survived by his wife, Grace (Schillaci) Kokot; son, Michael (Tammy) Kokot; grandchildren, Trevor and Emily Kokot; and siblings, Louis Willis, Janice Bistoff and Raymond, Dennis and Patricia Mink.

He was predeceased by his brother, David Mink.

Mr. Kokot was interred in Lakeside Memorial Cemetery.

Arrangements were made through the John J. Kaczor Funeral Home.

Daniel Mackey

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday (Oct. 4) at 10 a.m. from Most Precious Blood Church in Derby for Daniel J. Mackey, 44, of Derby, who died on Monday, October 1, 2012.

He is survived by his daughter, Ashley Kerr; parents, William and Carol Mackey Sr.; and siblings, Tammy (Paul) Sullivan and William (Judy) Jr. and Jeffrey Mackey.

He was predeceased by his siblings, Michael and Scott Mackey.

Mr. Mackey was interred in Eden Evergreen Cemetery.

Arrangements were made through the Addison Funeral Home.

Gwendolyn MacEwan Franklin


A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10 at Curly’s Grill and Banquet Center in Lackawanna for Gwendolyn MacEwan Franklin, 82, of Blasdell, who died on Thursday, September 13, 2012.

She is survived by her children, John (Helen), Elizabeth (Peter) and Glen (Jennifer); sister, Jeannette Kelly; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister, Joanne Twist.

Ms. MacEwan Franklin was the secretary and later the office manager for R.L. Sonnenberger, land surveyor in Buffalo for over 20 years.

Cremation arrangements were made through the Lombardo Funeral Home.

Dennis Peters

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 10 a.m. from Blessed John Paul II Church for Dennis J. Peters, of Lake View, who died on Saturday, October 6, 2012.

He is survived by his wife, Marie (Sermac) Krawiec; children, Jennifer (James) Conklin, Julie (Renato) Galich, John (Nobuko) Peters and Laura Slaten; siblings, Donna (Ken) Rubeck and David Peters; grandchildren, Danielle, Mathew, Luke, Joji, Tomoko, Michael, James, John and Jacqueline; great-grandchild, Jaylin; and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Donald and Rose (Torok) Peters.

George H. Wheeler Jr.

A graveside service was held on Monday (Oct. 8) from SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery for George H. Wheeler Jr., 63, of Eden, who died on Thursday, October 4, 2012.

He is survived by his wife, Gail (Rowell) Wheeler; children, George (Jill) III and Jessica Wheeler; and grandchildren, Landon, Brody and Baya Wheeler.

Mr. Wheeler was a truck driver for Nason Delivery in Springville.

He was a member of Livingstone Lodge 255 F&AM.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society.

Laura Jump

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family for Laura (Barnes) Jump, 89, of Garner, N.C., formerly of Eden and Blasdell, who died on Wednesday, October 3, 2012.

She is survived by her children, Laura Raun and Kenneth (Carolyn) and Gary (Frances) Jump; 11 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harvey C. Jump; and eight siblings.

Joan Pawlowski

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday (Oct. 5) from St. Bernadette’s Church in Orchard Park for Joan E. (Wagner) Pawlowski, of Hamburg, who died on Monday, October 1, 2012 surrounded by her loving family.

She is survived by her children, Carol A. (Michael) Valcourt, Mary L. (Roger) Courteau, Gregg A. (Kathleen) Pawlowski and Joanie M. (Michael) Kirst; sisters, Barbara (Ed) Crotty and Sue (Bud) Kane; and 12 grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Bernard P. Pawlowski; and siblings, Alice Kaszubowski, Norma McCloud and Alfred Wagner.

Mrs. Pawlowski was a librarian for 30 years at St. Bernadette’s School.

She belonged to the Altar and Rosary Society and was a Eucharistic Minister for St. Bernadette’s Church.

She also was a volunteer at Mercy Hospital for many years.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice Foundation.

She was interred in Nativity of Our Lord in Orchard Park.

Sophie Kaczynski

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 9:30 a.m. from Our Mother of Good Counsel Church for Sophie A. (nee Kowalczyk) Kaczynski, of Blasdell, who died on Saturday, October 6, 2012.

She is survived by her children, Edward (Sally) and Sister Geraldine Kaczynski; brother, Leo (late Norma) Kowalczyk; grandchildren, Scott (Jennifer) and Daniel (Rene) Kaczynski and Susan (Antonio) Cajigas; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Sarah, Benjamin, Daniel, Sophia, Connor, Emily and Rachel; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Edward A. Kaczynski; great-granddaughter, Megan; and siblings, Florence (late Norbert) Kupinski and Stephania (late Fred) Fintak.

Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

Lynn Schaefer

A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. from Mammoser’s Bar and Tavern in Hamburg for Lynn S. “Murphy” Schaefer, 55, of Florida and formerly of Hamburg, who died on Sunday, October 7, 2012.

He is survived by his parents, Gerald and Florence; siblings, Gary, Lawrence, Guy and Gail; and aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mr. Schaefer was an avid bowler throughout the Southtowns area, and accomplished a perfect 300 score at Legion Lanes.

Geraldine Denne


Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. from the First Church of Evans for Geraldine L. Denne, 94, of Derby, who died on Sunday, October 7, 2012.

She is survived by her children, Nathalie (David) Yager and Ronald (Karen) Denne; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Jacob H. Denne.

Interment will be in Lakeside Cemtery in Hamburg.

Arrangements were made through the Addison Funeral Home.

Frank Oleniacz

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday (Oct. 9) from Immaculate Conception Church for Frank H. Oleniacz, 87, of Eden, who died on Friday, October 5, 2012.

He is survived by his children, Karen (Robert) Schmitz, Susan (James) Brass and James (Sharron) Oleniacz; sister, Helen Oleniacz; and grandchildren, Jacob Brass, LTJG CJ Brass, USN and Katie Oleniacz.

He was predeceased by his wife, Joan M. (McMoil) Oleniacz; and siblings, Chester, Richard and Joseph Oleniacz.

Mr. Oleniacz was retired from Bethlehem Steel in Lackawanna. He was also a U.S. Naval veteran.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting deer. He was a knowledgeable horseman, starting with helping exercise his wife’s uncle’s harness horses at Buffalo Raceway and later supporting his children’s interest in riding and driving horses.

He made many close friends within the Amish Community.

He was buried in Hillcrest Cemetery. Arrangements were made through the Wentland Funeral Home.
