Death notices and obituaries from the Oct. 7 Springville Journal

Jean Bennett
Jean B. Bennett, 96, of Rotonda West, Fla., died Aug. 24.

She was born Aug. 15, 1916, in Washington, D.C., to the late C. Morris and Ethel (nee Brodie) Bennett, former residents of Springville.

She worked as a registered nurse for the FBI in Washington, D.C. and, upon retirement, moved to the Englewood, Fla. area.

She was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church of Rotonda, Order of the Eastern Star No. 300 of Englewood, Ladies Oriental Shrine of Sarasota, Rotonda West Womens Club, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the Rotonda West American Legion Post No. 113 Auxiliary. Until her recent illness, she was an active volunteer at the local hospital, the American Legion and other organizations.

She was the sister of Hugh (Bea) Bennett of Englewood, Fla., formerly of Springville, and John (Margaret) Bennett of Rochester and the late Robert Bennett, Helen Donaldson, Phyllis Cromarty and Alice Atkins.

A funeral was held Aug. 28 at the Lemon Bay Funeral Home in Englewood, Fla. Burial was in Springville. A memorial service and celebration of Jean’s life will be held Saturday, Oct. 6 at 1:30 p.m. from Salem Lutheran Church, Main Street, Springville, with lunch immediately following, at Apple Dumplin, Springville.

Maria Johnson
Maria E. Johnson, 79, of Dake Hill Road, Otto, died Sept. 27 at her home.

She was born Dec. 9, 1932 in Gowanda, the daughter of the late Howard and Bernice (nee Strickland) Taft.

She was a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses of Springville.

She was the wife of Richard Johnson; mother of Douglas (Betty) Johnson of Cattaraugus, Brian Johnson of East Otto, Charles (Kammie) Johnson of Perrysburg, Joanne Johnson of Napoli, Brenda Johnson of Cattaraugus and Bonnie (Charles) Fanning of Springville; grandmother of 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; sister of Linda (Floyd) Lamb of Gowanda and the late Cecil Johnston; also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. from the Kingdom Hall of Springville. Arrangements were made by the Mentley Funeral Home Inc., 411 Rock City St., Little Valley. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Otto Volunteer Fire Department or Homecare and Hospice.
