Obituaries for the week of July 26, 2012

Herbert Kusche

A private service was held for Herbert “Herb” Roy Kusche, 90, of Naples, Fla. and Hamburg, who died on Tuesday, July 3, 2012.

He is survived by his children, Susan (Roger) Ebert; Nancy (Richard) Markle and Jeffrey (Kathy Militello) Kusche; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Eleanor (Forbes) Kusche; and parents, Oswald James and Marta (Melde) Kusche.

Mr. Kusche was born in Weedsport, N.Y. He graduated from Weedsport High School in 1939 and received a bachelor of science degree in accounting from Syracuse University in 1943.

He then joined the War Food Administration as an analyst in Detroit.

After World War II ended in 1945, he began a 50-year career with Rich Products Corp. in Buffalo. There, he rose from one of the company’s original four employees to become the executive vice president. He continued to serve on the Rich Products board of directors until his death.

In addition to his corporate responsibilities, he was active in numerous community organizations. He served on several boards of directors, including the Buffalo area YMCA and Rotary Club of Hamburg as past president. He also served the Hamburg Presbyterian Church as elder, deacon and trustee. He was a member of the Moorings Presbyterian Church in Naples.

He was a member and officer of the Masonic Order, Lodge 625 in Hamburg.

In 1993, Syracuse University Club of Western New York honored him with its Outstanding Alumnus award.

An avid golfer, he enjoyed a 50-year membership at Orchard Park Country Club, where he served as past president.

A celebration of his life is being planned for a later date.

June Baldwin

A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 27 at 10 a.m. from the Tabernacle in Orchard Park for June (D’Amico) Baldwin, 79, of Derby, who died on Monday, July 23, 2012.

She is survived by her children, Cynthia (Kevin) Walters and Peter (Annette) Baldwin; siblings, John (Ann) Damin, Phyllis (George) Ulrich and Doreen (Malcolm) Claflin; grandchildren, Kevin and Sarah Walters; and siblings-in-law, Mary Ann (late Francis) Kaleta and George (Kathy) Baldwin.

She was predeceased by her husband, A.R. “Pete” Baldwin.

Interment services were private. Arrangements were made through the Wentland Funeral Home.

William Kuebler

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, Aug. 18 at 10 a.m. from SS. Peter and Paul’s Church for William George Kuebler, 84, of Loudon, Tenn., formerly of Hamburg, who died on Saturday, July 14, 2012.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Ann (Bieger) Kuebler; daughters, Kathleen (Paul) Powell, Patricia (Paul) Miller, Sandra (George) Vanderzell, Mary Jo (John) Leskiw, Nancy (Steven) Mullins and Susan (Bernard) Gregorowicz; brother, Charles (Barbara) Kuebler; sister-in-law, Dorothy Kuebler; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his brother, Leo I. Kuebler.

Mr. Kuebler retired from Bethlehem Steep Corp. after a 39-year career in various management positions.

He was a member of St. Thomas Church and was a 36-year member of the Knights of Columbus, holding several positions including grand knight.

An avid golfer and an accomplished wood worker, he founded the Tellico carvers club.

He will be remembered by his family and friends as a great husband, father and grandfather, and will be sorely missed.

Dominica Lardo

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday (July 24) from Immaculate Conception Church in Eden for Dominica M. (Renaldo) Lardo, 91, of Hamburg, who died on Friday, July 20, 2012.

She is survived by her children, Ronald Illardo, Kathleen (Terry) Gates and David (Martha) and Dennis Lardo; sister, Josephine Kusior; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her siblings, Lucille Kelm, Paul and Peter Renaldo, Laura Romero, Catherine Haynes and Carmella Russo; and parents, Daniel and Margaret Renaldo.

Mrs. Lardo was known for her avid card playing, pinochle games, sewing and her needlepoint work.

She was on the Braymiller’s Bowling League for many years. She enjoyed her time spent with the Hamburg and Eden senior citizens groups.

She will be remembered for selling raffle tickets for Immaculate Conception Church.

Arrangements were made through the Laing Funeral Home.

Doreen Spinner

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday (July 25) from Sacred Heart of Mary Church in North Collins for Doreen Anne (DeFisher) Spinner, 69, of Orchard Park, who died on Sunday, July 22, 2012.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Charles Spinner; children, Christina, Charles Jr. (Carrie) and John Spinner; grandchildren, Sophia, Olivia, Stella and Charlotte; and sister-in-law, Marie (Paul) Knibole.

Mrs. Spinner was born in Williamson, N.Y. and graduated from Williamson High School. She was a graduate of SUNY College at Buffalo.

After college, she worked as a certified elementary teacher and special education teacher in Toledo, Ohio while her husband attended law school.

She was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary Armor Volunteer Fire Department.

She was an avid tennis player at the South Towns Center and Vanderbilt Country Club in Naples, Fla.

She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She enjoyed traveling, having visited several countries in Europe.

Mrs. Spinner led an active social life and enjoyed the company of long time friends. She enjoyed dining out and participated in the Gourmet Club.

She was an avid reader, enjoyed music and attending performing arts.

She was a loving and caring individual with a positive spirit.

Gerald Spangler

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday (July 24) from St. Bernadette’s Church for Gerald Curtiss “Curt” Spangler, 75, of Hamburg, who died on Thursday, July 19, 2012.

He is survived by his wife, Rosalie (Church) Spangler; children, Deborah (Michael) Watie, Tina (James) Kubiak, Shawn Swanson, Angel (Randy) Hoak and Craig and Seth Spangler; siblings, Joan Turnell and Sr. Elaine Spangler; 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Mr. Spangler was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He retired as director of operations with AT&T in Buffalo.

Dorothy Miller

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, July 20 at the Immaculate Conception Church for Dorothy M. (Flynn) Miller, 80, of Eden, who died on Monday, July 16, 2012.

She is survived by her husband, Richard L. Miller Sr.; sons, Richard (Leeann) Jr. and Joseph Miller; siblings, Elizabeth Hamilton and Richard Flynn; and five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents, Edward and Mary Flynn.

Mrs. Miller was born on April 8, 1934 in Portage, Pa., one of 16 children of Edward and Mary Flynn. She married her husband in 1952 when he returned from the service during the Korean Conflict. They moved to Eden in 1956 where they raised their family and lived ever since.

On July 23 they would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

She enjoyed to crochet.

Casimer Jurek

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday (July 20) from St. John Vianney Church in Orchard Park for Casimer Jurek Jr. of Hamburg, who died on Tuesday, July 17, 2012.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Ann Jurek; children, Trissa (Stephen) DeRaddo, Karon (John) Sroka, Linda (Jim) Vedora, Marybeth (Bruce) Bingenheimer and Michael and David Jurek; brothers, sisters, 14 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Avalon Saramak

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday (July 20) from Blessed John Paul II Parish for Avalon L. (White) Saramak, of Hamburg, who died on Tuesday, July 17, 2012.

She is survived by her children, Mary E. (Donald) White and Edward J. and John R. (Laureen) Saramak; and grandchildren, William White and Aaron, Matt and Emily Saramak.

She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Edward J. Saramak; and daughter, Nancie Marie Saramak.

Mrs. Saramak was a member of the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelities and a World War II Army veteran.

She was interred in Lakeside Memorial Cemetery.

Arrangements were made through the John J. Kaczor Funeral Home.

Charles Phillips

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 27 at 10 a.m. from the Hamburg Chapel at the John J. Kaczor Funeral Home for Charles H. Phillips, 53, of Derby, who died on Saturday, July 21, 2012.

He is survived by his wife, Helen (Sergejczuk) Phillips; children, Steven (Kerrie Aquino) and Jeffrey Phillips; siblings, Richard (Donna) and Fred (Roberta) Phillips and Noraine (Skip) Deguire; and grandchildren, Bryce and Maximillian Phillips.

He was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Loraine (Duvall) Phillips; and brother, John (late Gail) Duvall.

Mr. Phillips was an ironworker and on the executive board of Ironworkers Local No. 6.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice Foundation of WNY.

Visitation will be held from the John J. Kaczor Funeral Home on Thursday, July 26 from 4 to 8 p.m.

Interment will be in Lakeside Memorial Cemetery.

Gerald Flynn

A graveside service was held on Monday (July 23) at Evergreen Cemetery in Eden for Gerald F. Flynn, 63, of Brant, who died on Wednesday, July 18, 2012.

He is survived by his children, Barbara (John) Sickau and Ronald M. and Sandy (Chris Genco) Flynn and Gerald J.; brother, Joseph Flynn; grandchildren, Danielle, Demi, Caitlin, Brianna, Cassidy, Jade, Zachary, Jewel, Evan, Zoey and Gabrielle; and great-grandson, Troy.

He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Josephine Flynn; and sister, Elaine Flynn.

Mr. Flynn was born in Buffalo in 1948.

He was an employee of the Eden Central School District for 41 years.

He was known as a hard working gentleman who loved his family, especially his grandchildren. He also had a love for traveling.

Memorials may be made to the Eden Emergency Squad.

Earl Lawton

Funeral services were held on Monday (July 23) from the Wentland Funeral Home for Earl “Stoney” Lawton, 95, of North Collins, who died on Friday, July 20, 2012.

He is survived by his children, Judy (Harold) Steff, Lynda (Larry) Polzin, Sharon M. Haag, Suezann (Richard) Williams, Phyllis (Tom) Gernatt and Lawrence “Swamper” (Sylvia), James, Kenneth (Barb) and David (Laurie Privitera) Lawton; 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Sara (Schmitt) Lawton; and brother, Luther Lawton.

Mr. Lawton was buried in St, Martin’s Cemetery in Langford.

Janet Ely

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday (July 24) from Christ Our King Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. for Janet Marjorie (Ulrich) Ely, 94, of Mt. Pleasant, who died on Wednesday, July 18, 2012.

She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Paul Otis Ely; children, Gail (Dominick) Masocco and Karen (Carmen) Delcioppo; grandchildren, Julianne and Matthew Masocco, Alicia Masocco-Steele, Michael, Paul, Steven and Marie Delcioppo, LaChandra Leggett and Ryan Ely; daughter-in-law, Christine Ely; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her son, John Neuman Ely; her sister, Dorothy Streit; and parents, Stephen Matthew Ulrich and Adele Ruth (Creenan) Ulrich.

Mrs. Ely was born in Buffalo in 1918.

She was a member of Christ Our King Catholic Church and was a member of Knights of Columbus Auxiliary in Homosassa, Fla.

She was also a member of the Altar Rosary Society and Newcomers Club in Eden.

Chester Jaskula


Internment services will be held from the Lakeside Memorial Cemetery in Hamburg at the convenience of the family for Chester J. Jaskula, 85, of Baldwinsville, N.Y., who died on Monday, July 2, 2012.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Henrietta Jaskula; children, Linda (Dennis) Stimson, Elizabeth Obad and Dennis (Marcia) Jaskula; grandchildren, Jeffrey S. (Debbie) Obad, Danielle Cunningham, Katherine Stimson and Edward (Ulonda) and Peter (Kimberly) Jaskula; great-grandchildren, Nate Cleveland, Jeffrey John Obad and Paige, Daniel, Isabella and Matthew Jaskula; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, John and Mildred (Haley) Jaskula Sr.; siblings, Dolores (Ernst) Faihst and Frances and John Jr. (Janet) Jaskula; and grandson, George Obad, USMC.

Mr. Jaskula was born in Buffalo.

A former long time resident of the Baldwinsville area, he resided until recently in Phoenix, N.Y.

He was a proud U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II.

He was a former Town of Hamburg police officer.

He retired in 1983 as an assistant traffic supervisor for the Syracuse Division of the New York State Thruway Authority.

In the early years of his retirement, he was a volunteer driver for the Greater Baldwinsville Ambulance Corps.

He enjoyed “puttering” around his workshop and traveling in his motor home with his wife. The couple spent many winters in Ormond Beach, Fla.

There were no calling hours. Arrangements were made through the Falardeau Funeral Home in Baldwinsville.

Leta Merrow

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Aug. 26 at 2:30 p.m. from the Hamburg United Methodist Church for Leta L. (Leonard) Merrow, 97, of Hamburg, who died on Wednesday, July 18, 2012.

She is survived by her sons, Arthur and Curtis Merrow; and grandchildren, Anne, Amanda and Steven Merrow.

She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Merrow; daughter, Elizabeth Merrow; and parents, Herbert and Bertha Leonard.

Mrs. Merrow was born in 1915 in Torrington, Conn. She moved with her family to East Aurora and graduated from East Aurora High School.

She received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University at Buffalo.

While employed at Niagara Lithograph, she met her husband, Arthur, an engineer for Bethlehem Steel who predeceased her by 19 years.

She enjoyed traveling with her husband to remote parts of the world and learning about different cultures.

She was deeply interested in her family genealogy and took many trips to New England to research her family tree. She was proud to uncover 13 Revolutionary War veterans among her ancestors.

She was active in the Hamburg United Methodist Church and served at one time as president of Buffalo United Methodist Women.

She also served for eight years on the Board of Financial Administration for the National Methodist Church.

Esther Euler


A memorial service will be held at a later date for Esther F. (Marks) Euler, 94, of Hamburg, formerly of Eden, who died on Thursday, July 19, 2012.

She is survived by her daughter, Molly (Douglas) Mailey; siblings, John (late JoAnne) Marks and Vera Jackson; and grandchildren, Philip (Cami) Nichols and Candace (Jay) Wagner.

She was predeceased by her husband, Eugene Euler; and siblings, Arthur Marks, Alma (late Wally) Peterson and Sophia Yeager.

Mrs. Euler was a waitress at the former Laube’s Old Spain in Buffalo.

Arrangements were made through the Donald M. Demmerley Funearl Home.
