Donald Bauer

Donald E. Bauer, 82, of Hamburg, died Aug. 15 in his Florida home.

He retired from the United States Postal Service in Hamburg as a vehicle maintenance supervisor.

He was the husband of the late Jan (nee Harben) Bauer; father of Donna (Tim) Jerome, Cheryl Black, Sandra (Robert) Schichtel and the late Karen Decker; brother of John “Jack” Bauer; also survived by eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A private funeral service was held. Arrangements by John J. Kaczor Funeral Home Inc.

Amelia Gostomski
Amelia V. (nee Mihalo) Gostomski, 67, of Hamburg, died Aug. 21.

She was a member of Saint John the Baptist Church of Boston and was also a secretary at Jewett Agency.

She was the mother of Sheri and Bobbi Gostomski; grandmother of Sabre and Derek Lewis; sister of Audrey (late Thomas) Kasprzyk, Edward and the late Angeline Mihalo.

Services were held from the Donald M. Demmerley Funeral Home. A memorial Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Oratory in East Eden, at a later date.

Jack Geidel
Jack R. Geidel, 86, of Angola, died Aug. 23.

He was the husband of 60 years of Anna (nee Wockasen); father of Andrea Lynn Wiley, Sandra (Paul) Lewis and Timothy Geidel; grandfather of Brandon Wiley, Mark (Jennifer) Wiley, Greg (Grace) Long, Sarah (Kurt) Wood and Sydney Geidel and great-grandfather of Lexi and Gage.

Born and raised in Pennsylvania, he moved to Angola, after serving in the United States Army. He was the manager of the Grandview Supermarket and a sales representative for General Foods, where he received the award for outstanding sales performance in supermarket services.

He was the owner of the Bells IGA grocery store in Angola. He operated an embroidery and screen printing business with his daughter Lynn and also worked for National Fuel, securing easements and right-of-way rights from landowners across Western New York.

He was a 32-year member of the Lake Shore Central Board of Education and spent 26 years as board president. He was a 25-year member of the Lion’s Club, where he spent two years as president. He was a member of the Marine Midland Advisory Board, a member of the Board of Managers of Erie County Sewer District No. 2 and was a committee member of the New York State School Boards Association. He was named citizen of the year by the Evans-Brant Chamber of Commerce and was inducted onto the Lake Shore wall of fame in 2007.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Sept. 7 at the Most Precious Blood Church, located at 22 Prospect St. in Angola.

Joan Groth
Joan (nee Moyle) Groth of Lake View died Aug. 24.

She was the wife of the late Joseph Groth; mother of Mary Ellen (Joseph) Ziolko, Joan (David) Przystal, Peg (late Bill) Hermann, Theresa (Terrance) Wellenzohn, Josie Caruana and Loretta (Jerry) Kelly; daughter of the late William and Joan Moyle; sister of Betty (late Sam) Neill, the late Mina (late Peter) McKinnon and the late Robert Moyle; also survived by 15 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A service was held at the Lakeside Memorial Funeral Home on Aug. 20 and a Mass of Christian burial was held Aug. 21 at Saints Peter & Paul Church.

John Jazembak
John M. Jazembak, 94, died on Aug. 14.

He was the husband of Mildred (nee Horton) for 66 years; father of the late Donald (Lynn Kline), David (Sandy); brother of the late Walter, Linda, Ann, Adeline, Irene and Terry; grandfather of Sheri and Randy (Jean Cosenza); great-grandfather of Alexander; also survived by Natalie (Walter) Martin.

Private interment was held at the Evergreen Cemetery.

Florence Jones
Florence M. (nee Gordon) Jones of Hamburg died Aug. 24.

She was the wife of the late Stanley Jones; mother of the late John Gordon Jones; also survived by two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held at the Loomis, Offers & Loomis Inc.’s Hamburg Chapel, located at 207 Main St. A funeral was held on Aug. 27, followed by a Mass of Christian burial from Saints Peter & Paul Church.

Trooper William Keane

William P. Keane, 56, of Lake View, died suddenly on Aug. 23.

He worked as a New York state trooper.

He was the husband of Sharon (nee Bugenhagen) Keane; father of Julie (James Frost) Rothermel, Brian (Sabrina) Rothermel, Carolyn (Scott McKee) Keane, Melissa (P.J.) Pallini; Kelsey Lynn (Ross McGarry) Gabriel, Allison (Steve MacLean) Keane and Kelsey Beth Keane; grandfather of Jaiden Frost, Jessica Pallini, Jordyn Frost, Hannah Pallini, Eliza Pallini and Noah Rothermel; son of the late William and Anne Marie (George) Keane; brother of Elizabeth (Glenn) Jones, Daniel (Elaine) Keane, Karen (Steve) Curtis, Patrick (Madonna) Keane, Joseph Keane, John (Janet) Keane, James (Jolynn) Keane, Anne Marie Keane and the late Thomas Keane; son-in-law of Audrey (Arthur O’Leary) Bugenhagen and the late Roy Bugenhagen; also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation will be held from the John J. Kaczor Funeral Home’s Hamburg chapel, located at 5453 Southwestern Blvd., from 3 – 8 p.m. on Aug. 29. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Aug. 30 from Saints Peter & Paul Church, located at 66 East Main St. in Hamburg. Interment will follow in Lakeside Memorial Cemetery.

David Mason
David G. Mason, 44, of Angola, died Aug. 18, after a battle with cancer.

He made a tissue donation, to help find a cure for cancer.

He was the husband of Yvette (nee Ohar) Mason; father of Shawn Lyon, Hannah and Jane Mason; son of Ronald and Lynda Mason; brother of Randy (Lynn) Mason and Carol (Frank) Zeffiro.

A service was held Aug. 23 from the Addison Funeral Home of Angola.

Jacob Schoellkopf

Jacob Frederick Schoellkopf V died Aug. 23, after a battle with cancer.

He is survived by Nancy, his wife of 39 years; children Susan (Bill) Schoellkopf Mele, J. Frederick (Sandy) Schoellkopf VI, Kristin (Buddy) Schoellkopf Borowiak and Olive (Abby) Abbott Schoellkopf; grandchildren Jacob Schoellkopf VII, Emily Schoellkopf, Jack Borowiak, Kristin Borowiak and Athena Mathews; son of the late Jacob Frederick Schoellkopf IV and the late Patricia Schoellkopf of Lakeview. Brother of Marion Meyer of Zurich, Switzerland; Sandra Plowden of Winnetka, IL; Phoebe White of Los Angeles, Calif. and Spring Schoellkopf of Marblehead, Mass.

Burial will be private. A memorial service will be announced, at a later date.

Jeff Simons
Jeff M. Simons of Angola died Aug. 19.

He was the son of John and the late Christine (nee Jaromin) Simons; brother of John Jr. (Dawn), William and Patricia Simons; uncle of Kimberley, Nikole and Erika Simons.

A memorial service was held Aug. 22 at the Southtowns Christian Center, located at 6619 Southwestern Blvd. in Lake View.

Donald Staley
Donald L. Staley of Salamanca (formerly of Hamburg) died July 7.

He was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Mary (nee Schuster) Staley; sisters, Betty Fisher, Caroline Hund and brother Albert Staley Jr. He is survived by sisters Elinor Wilson and Ann Carroll of California and brother Roge of Texas.

No funeral service has been planned.
