Sister Mary Leontine Gross

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday (Feb. 8) from Immaculate Conception Convent Chapel for Sister Mary Leontine Gross, 90, of Hamburg, who died on Monday, February 4, 2013.

She is survived by her sister, Jean (Joseph) Martinchick; sister-in-law, Catherine Gross; many nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents, Andrew and Pauline (Zmudzin) Gross.

Sophie Gross was born on August 16, 1922 in Shamokin, Pa. to the late Andrew and the late Pauline (nee Zmudzin). On Sept. 1, 1936 she entered the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph as an aspirant. Sister Leontine became a postulant on Aug. 30, 1939 and professed her final vows on July 8, 1944.

Sister Leontine attended St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in Brooklyn, and the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. where she earned a master’s degree in nursing.

Sister Leontine began her religious vocation as a teacher at St. Stanislaus, Chicopee, Mass. Commencing in 1949, Sister Leontine ministered for 54 years in the field of healthcare in various positions – as a staff nurse at St. Anthony’s Home, Hamburg; head nurse, supervisor, and Assistant Director of Nursing Services at St. Mary’s Hospital, Brooklyn; and Director of Nursing and Director of Volunteer Services at St. Joseph Hospital, Cheektowaga. Sister Leontine joined the Sisters in the Colette Hilbert Care Community in December 2005.

Sister Leontine will be remembered as a gentle woman; compassionate and generous to a fault. A true friend to everyone, she lent a helping hand and was never too busy to listen to both sides of a story. Sister Leontine was also a very trusting person, modeled on the Sacred Heart. She distributed badges of the Sacred Heart to patients with the short phrase, “Jesus, I trust in you.” Sister Leontine had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed sharing jokes and tidbits for every occasion. She was never too busy and if there was an interruption in her schedule or plans, she would say “Jesus interrupts your day…it is the sacrament of the moment, seize it!”

Memorials may be made to the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph.

Burial was at St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
