John Brown Jr.
John Brown Jr.

John Brown Jr., 73, of Carlsbad, Calif., formerly of Hamburg, died Feb. 12.

He was employed as an ironworker by Bethlehem Steel in Lackawanna. He was a member of Ironworker Union No. 6. He left Bethlehem Steel in 1971, moved to Phoenix, Ariz. and worked for 25 years as a member of the Ironworker Union No. 75. In 1995, he and his wife moved to the San Diego area, where he had been stationed as a United States Marine in 1962.

He worked through Ironworker Union No. 229 out of San Diego, Calif. until he retired in 2002. He played softball for the North County Senior Softball League in Carlsbad and fished in Mexico.

He was a member of the Hamburg High School class of 1958; he attended class reunions and often told jokes.

He was the husband of Sylvia (nee Miedowicz); son of the late John and Dorothy (nee Mammoser) Brown; stepson of Betty Brown; father of Maryjane (Matt Miller) Brown-Murphy, Dorothy Brown and Jennifer (John) Crowell; grandfather of Alix Brown, Dakota Murphy and Jacob Murphy; brother of Clare (John) Noce, Joseph (late Sharon) Brown, Joan Christensen, Susan (Tim) Peck, Barbara (Joseph Kilbridge) Brown Clauss and Michael (Tina) Brown; survived by nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life party will be held in June at Mammoser’s in Hamburg.

Audrey Cook

Audrey (nee Jonathan) Cook, 72, of Ohsweken, Ontario, formerly of the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation, died March 14.

She was the wife of the late Merlyn “Snake” Cook; mother of Janis (Chris Brooks) Henhawk, Linda Henhawk, Deborah Jonathan, Vincent Jonathan, Lester Jonathan, Sharon (Bear Maracle) Jamieson and the late Merl Cook; grandmother of 15; great-grandmother of 10; sister of Cookie Ekes, Deborah Goodwin, Carol Jordon, Russel Jonathan, Ralph Jonathan, Faron Jonathan, Rodney Hill and the late Norma, Sonny and Wayne Jonathan; survived by nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Kenneth Ditcher

Kenneth Ditcher, 86, of Farnham died March 9.

He was the husband of the late Verna Ditcher; father of David (Connie) Ditcher and Doreen (William) Hedderich; brother of Irene (Vincent) Brant; grandfather of Shanna Lewandowski, August and Dillion Hedderich; great-grandfather of Morgan Lewandowski.

Visitation was held from the Addison Funeral Home Inc.

Jayne Jensen

Jayne (nee Byroads) Jensen, 80, of Angola died at home on March 11.

She played tennis and golf. She crocheted afghans and baked, to support the First Church of Evans.

She was the wife of 62 years of Thomas Jensen; daughter of the late Julia and Alfred Byroads of Sandusky, N.Y.; mother of Patricia (William) DePan, Amy Whitworth, Thomas (Patty) Jensen and Jenifer (Ed Davidson) Jensen; grandmother of 10 grandchildren; great-grandmother of 14; great-great-great-grandmother of one; sister of January Houck, Marjorie Reichert, Georgiana Swain and Wilma Tucker.

Jayne Jensen
Richard Lindner

Richard Lindner, 51, of Holland died March 14.

He was born Nov. 5, 1962 in Lackawanna. He married Lisa Foit on March 16, 1990 in Orchard Park. He worked for Sahlem’s Roofing and Siding Inc. for 24 years, specializing in siding and windows.

He watched sports, spent time outside, watched old black-and-white films, read, made pasta sauce, spent time with his family and attended all types of concerts.

He was the son of Lewis and the late Judith (nee Hesslink) Lindner; husband of Lisa (nee Foit); father of Emilee and Aimee Lindner; brother of Cheryl (Jim) Clementson, Howard (Lisa) Lindner and John Scott Lindner; also survived by several nieces and nephews.

There will be no prior visitation. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 21 at Saint James United Church of Christ in Hamburg.

Memorials may be made to the Holland Fire Department, 7640 Hunters Creek Road, Holland, N.Y.

Richard Lindner
Robert Schmitt

Robert Schmitt, 66, of Beechgrove, Tenn., formerly of East Eden, died March 11.

He was a United States Marine Corps veteran. He fought in the Vietnam War from 1966 – 1968 and retired from Cason’s Transport in 2009 from Smyrna, Tenn. He attended family gatherings, fished and boated.

He was born in Springville on March 27, 1947 to the late Herman and Dorothy Schmitt. He was the husband of 44 years of Lorraine; father of Michele (Timmy) Brown, Kevin (Jennifer) and Tina (Paul) Cousino; grandfather of Dylan; brother of Sally (Donny) Fox, Carol Smolinski, Hermie (Mira), Ronald and Gary (Sharon); also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; predeceased by sister and brother in-laws Kathleen (Richie) Wilczynski and Bob Smolinski.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. at Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in East Eden on Thursday, March 20, followed by a military tribute.

Michael Szarafin

Michael Szarafin, 59, of Angola died March 13.

He was the husband of Susan (nee Marranca) Szarafin; father of Lauren Szarafin, Justine (Charles) Reed and Michael (Loretta Tucker) Szarafin; brother of Jerry (Susan) Szarafin, Judy (Lou) Calandra and Bernadette (Gabe) McClure-Marciniak; grandfather of Emma Gretschmann, Alaina, Mason, Logan Reed and Liam Gould-Szarafin.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on March 21 from the Addison Funeral Home Inc., located at 262 Main St. in Angola.
