Obituaries for the Hamburg, Eden, North Collins areas for the week of Sept. 6, 2012

John Matwijow

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 11:30 a.m. from the Quinn-Amigone Funeral Home in Orchard Park for John E. Matwijow, of Florida, who died on Saturday, June 16, 2012.

The family will be present at the Quinn-Amigone Funeral Home for visitation on Saturday, Sept. 8 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.



Tammy Maracle


A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday (Sept. 5) from St. Francis Of Assisi Church for Tammy M. (Sharpe) Maracle, of Tonawanda, formerly of the Hamburg area, who died on Thursday, August 30, 2012.

She is survived by her husband, Michael Maracle; parents, John (Mary) Kaiser Jr. and Michele (Tom) Malota; siblings, Michael Ripple, Emma (Brad) Alpherr, Jessica (Bryan) Neischel, Murray (Amy) Sawyer, Mary (Jeff) Baldwin and Thomas (Beth) and Michael (Marlea) Malota; grandparents, John Kaiser Sr. and Kathleen Sharpe; and nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were made through the Lakeside Memorial Funeral Home.

Donald Jazembak

A graveside and interment service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. from the Eden Cemetery on on Church Street in Eden for Donald “Donnie” John Jazembak, 62, of Eden, who died on Wednesday, August 8, 2012.

He is survived by his beloved of 26 years, Linda “Lynn” Kline; parents, John and Mildred (Horton) Jazembak; children, Sheri Lynn and Randy (Jean Cosenza) Jazembak; step-children, AJ (Tammy) Kline, Kara (Bob) Houseknecht; brother, David (Sandy) Jazembak; grandchildren, Alexander “Al” Jazembak and Sean and Aaron Kline; and additional family members and friends

Mr. Jazembak grew up in Eden and attended Eden schools.

He was in the Coast Guard from 1969 to 1973.

He lived and raised his family in Derby. He was a master woodworker by hobby and a general contractor by trade.

He enjoyed traveling, gardening and working in his wood shop. He loved to build things.

He was a NASCAR enthusiast and proudly represented his son as crew chief of Jazembak Racing Team.

He was a true grandpa and loved his grandchildren very much. He will be missed dearly by those who knew him.

The family invites all to participate in a day of remembrance on Saturday, Sept. 15 at noon from the American Legion Newell-Faulkner Post No. 880 in Eden.

Jeffrey Gearhart

Private services were held at the convenience of the family for Jeffrey M. Gearhart, 50, of Buffalo, formerly of North Collins, who died on Wednesday, August 29, 2012.

He is survived by his caregivers, Frank and Kattie Quebral; siblings, Donna (Dale) Snyder, Deborah (John) Rivers, Susan (Lazlo) Vega and Steven (late Ann), Christopher and Matthew Gearhart; sibling-in-law, Teddi Gearhart; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his siblings, Donald, Dennis and Douglas (Anne) Gearhart.

Memorials may be made to the Liver Foundation.

Arrangements were made through the Wentland Funeral Home.

Paul Cannon

Word has been received that Paul Henry Cannon, 73, of Blacksburg, S.C., formerly of Hamburg, died on Wednesday, August 29, 2012.

He is survived by his siblings, Joan (Douglas) Cannon Nichols and James P. (Bonnie) Cannon; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Paul Edward and Anne Teloh Cannon.

Mr. Cannon was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War, and a member of the VFW.

He was of the Catholic faith.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of South Carolina, 1612 North Limestone St., Gaffney, S.C. 29341.

John McLaughlin

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, (Aug. 31) from St. Francis of Assisi Church for John D. McLaughlin of Hamburg, who died on Monday, August 27, 2012.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Lou McLaughlin; children, Winifred, Steven (Annemarie), Sean and Patrick McLaughlin; siblings, Dorothy Shaw and Jean Lang; and eight grandchildren.

He was interred in Lakeside Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the SPCA of Erie County.

Arrangements were made through the Lakeside Memorial Funeral Home.

Lorene Faraci

A funeral service was held on Monday (Sept. 3) from the Lakeside Memorial Funeral Home for Lorene H. Faraci, of Eden, who died on Friday, August 31, 2012.

She is survived by her children, Charles (Karen) Faraci and P. Jonelle (Phil) Georger; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Samuel Faraci; and son, Richard (late Marcia) Faraci.

Private interment services were held from the First Church of Evans Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Buffalo.

Lillian Castro

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday (Sept. 5) from Blessed John Paul II Church for Lillian Marie “Pinky” (Hoppe) Castro, 72, of Homosassa, Fla., formerly of Derby, who died on Tuesday, August 28, 2012.

She is survived by her children, Carolyn Harmon and Douglas (Dawn) and Mark Hoppe; sister, Linda (Ronald) Petrus; grandchildren, Joseph Harmon and Crystal, Justin, Mark, Michael (Bee) and Madylin Hoppe; great-grandchild, Kinsley Hoppe; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Castro; and siblings, Janie (late Charles) Morgan and Harvey Wightman.

Mrs. Castro worked at Walmart for the past 10 years. She made many friends and was loved by those who knew her. She always had a smile on her face and enjoyed helping her customers.

She had a love for gardening, puzzles and going to the casino to play her favorite “Miss Kitty” slot machine.

She was interred in St. Vincent’s Cemetery.

Arrangements were made through the Addison Funeral Home.

Rosemarie VonBuhr

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday (Sept. 5) from Blessed John Paul II Church for Rosemarie A. (Pratt) VonBuhr, 74, of Derby, who died on Saturday, September 1, 2012.

She is survived by her children, Susanne (Alan) Gordon, Linda (Bill) Busch and Paul E. (Maria) VonBuhr; and six grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Earl P. VonBuhr; and brother, Richard Pratt.

She was interred at St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery.

Arrangements were made through the John J. Kaczor Funeral Home.

Bert Layton

Funeral services were held on Monday (Sept. 3) from the Wentland Funeral Home for Bert V. Layton, 76, of North Collins, who died on Friday, August 31, 2012.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Jean (Winters) Layton; children, Betty (Andrew) Krivulka, Nancy (Brian) Humprey and Larry, Garry (Lorraine) and Mark Layton; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and siblings.

He was predeceased his son, Ron Layton.

He was buried in North Collins.

Marlane Bozek

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 10 a.m. from St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Orchard Park for Marlane A. (Steigert) Bozek, of Blasdell, who died on Friday, August 31, 2012.

She is survived by her children, Justin, Evan and Nathan Bozek; parents, Peter and Jane (Erler) Steigert; siblings, Warren Steigert and Kimberly (Brian) Schwinn; best friend, Alice (Roger) Pokojski; companion, Dave Damstetter; additional family and many dear friends.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Senior High Youth Group, Gilda’s Club, Camp Good Days and Special Times or Camp Pioneer.

Rosemarie Nowak

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. from SS. Peter and Paul Church for Rosemarie (Gorski) Nowak, 76, of Hamburg, who died on Saturday, September 1, 2012.

She is survived by her children, Michael (Jacqueline) and David (Margaret) Piazza and Richard (Nancy) Nowak; grandchildren, Sean, Sara, Kyle, Patrick and Alyssa; and step-grandchildren, Christina, Jamie and Sarahbeth.

Mrs. Nowak was a receptionist at Bob Evans in Hamburg.

She worked for Legislator Karl Henry and Judge McGowan.

She was a Republican committeewoman and the Committeewoman of the Year in 1989.

She was the secretary of Southtowns Hockey League during the 1970s and 1980s, and was the former secretary and treasurer of Hamburg High School Hockey Club.

Interment will be in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Scranton Volunteer Fire Company.

Arrangements were made through the Donald M. Demmerley Funeral Home.

Thomas Corcoran

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Sept. 7 at 11:15 a.m. from Our Mother of Good Counsel Church for Thomas W. Corcoran of Blasdell, who died on Monday, September 3, 2012.

He is survived by his wife, Antonia “Boots” (Jasiura) Corcoran; children, Sandra (Keith) Dauphin and Dawn Marie (William) Schwab; siblings, Arline (Vern) Killian, Helen (late Ernest) Jewett and Richard (Marilyn) and Robert (Becky) Corcoran; grandchildren, Jacob, Kaleigh and Noah; additional family members and many dear friends.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Karen; and parents, John and Mary (Quinn) Corcoran.

Mr. Corcoran was a member of the Knights of St. John Commandery No. 391, a Eucharistic Minister at Our Mother of Good Counsel Church, past Union Steward of Local No. 375 and an avid fisherman.

Arrangements were made through the John J. Kaczor Funeral Home, Blasdell/Lackawanna Chapel, where visitation will be held on Thursday, Sept. 6 from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.

Kaylyn Ayers

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 6 at 11 a.m. from the Lakeside Memorial Funeral Home for Kaylyn A. Ayers of Lake View, who died on Sunday, September 2, 2012.

She is survived by her parents, William P. Ayers and Lori M. Degre; sibling, Chandler Ayers; grandparents, Francis (late Aletha) Ayers and Rayne and Patricia Degre; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
