Obituaries for the week of June 28, 2012

Dorothy Downer

A private ceremony was held for Dorothy “Jean” Downer, 87, of Fairfield, Ct., formally of Hamburg, who died on Friday, June 15, 2012.

She is survived by children, Carolyn Morgano, Susan (Mark) Durham and David and Peter Amann; 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, six nieces and three nephews.

She was predeceased by her husbands, Harold “John” Amann (1957) and Prescott Downer (1992); parents, Peter and Caroline Beck; and brother, Louis “Bud” Beck.

Mrs. Downer was born Feb. 21, 1925 in Philadelphia Pa. She attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a WAVE in the hospital corps.

After marrying John Amann in 1946, they lived in the Philadelphia area before settling in Gowanda.

Following John’s death, she married Prescott Downer in 1958 and they lived in Hamburg before retiring to the Pinehurst/Southern Pines, North Carolina area in 1982.

She was an active member of her churches and numerous volunteer organizations and charities, including the Red Cross and Camp Fire Girls, and was the founder of the Seven Lakes (N.C.) Diamonds.

During her retirement, she travelled extensively and enjoyed life to the fullest. Her sense of humor, desire to be independent and love of novelty, companionship and family continued to the end.

She will be missed by her family and the many friends she made wherever she lived and travelled.

She was interred in Pine Hill Cemetery, Gowanda.

Jason Pieczonka

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday (June 25) from Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church for Jason J. Pieczonka of Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of Blasdell, who died on Tuesday, June 19, 2012.

He is survived by his parents, James and Carol (Sikora) Pieczonka; sister, Dr. Sheila (Todd) Pieczonka Thomas; nephew and niece, Brayden and Makayla Thomas; loving companion, Courtney Smith; additional family members and many dear friends.

He was predeceased by his sisters, Lisa Marie and Alicia Pieczonka.

Mr. Pieczonka was a member of the Florida Bar Association, an attorney for the Conroy and Simberg Law Firm in Fort Myers, a volunteer for the VITA program, president of the Business Law Society and a member of the Sports and Entertainment Law Society.

He was a 2000 graduate of St. Francis High School.

He was interred in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Carl Herod

Private funeral services were held for Carl Herod, 77, of North Collins, who died on Sunday, June 24, 2012.

He is survived by his wife, Angeline (Wierchowski) Herod; children, Robert (Kathy), Jerome (Marylou) Brian (Kathy) and Mark (Elizabeth O’Mara) Herod; and seven grandchildren.

Arrangements were made through the Wentland Funeral Home.

Ruth Stevens

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday (June 20) at SS. Peter and Paul Church for Ruth A. (Smithmyer) Stevens, 90, of Hamburg, who died on Monday, June 18, 2012.

She is survived by her husband of 71 years, John “Jack” Stevens; children, Diane Klass, Sue (Bob) Blaszak and John, Jeffrey (Lynda) and Brian Stevens;14 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents; William and Olive Smithmyer; and five siblings.

Mrs. Stevens was born and raised in Altoona, Pa. and moved to Hamburg in 1955.

She was the office manager for Anthony C. Ilardo, attorney for 20 years and a long time members of SS. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church.

Memorials can be made to Hospice Foundation or SS. Peter and Paul Church.

Kathleen Lamm

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, June 29 at 10 a.m. from SS. Peter and Paul Church in Hamburg for Kathleen Marie (Riordan) Lamm, 56, who died on Friday, June 22, 2012.

She is survived by her husband of 34 years, David W. Lamm; children, William (Kathy) and Jennifer, Michael, John and James.

Mrs. Lamm was born to Dr. and Mrs. Arthur Riordan in Buffalo.

She graduated from Hamburg High School in 1973 and earned a bachelor of arts degree in biochemistry from Canisius College in 1977.

She married her husband in 1997 and was a devoted Army wife during his 28-year military career.

She was widely recognized for her volunteer service to the Catholic Church, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and the Mount Vernon High School.

She earned a master’s degree in education from George Mason University and taught in Fairfax County, Va.

Interment will be in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery.

Arrangements were made through the John J. Kaczor Funeral Home.

Gerald May

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday (June 23) from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Boston for Gerald Arthur “Jerry” May, 57, of Colden, who died on Tuesday, June 19, 2012.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Jacqueline (Haney) May; children, Sabrina M., Sandra A., Gerald M. and Garrett A. May; parents, Arthur and Martha May; and sister, Dianna Southward.

He was predeceased by his brother, John May.

Mr. May was born in Buffalo and graduated from Hamburg High School in 1973.

After graduation, he began working for Fisher-Price as a forklift driver and advanced to the engineering department and was senior product engineer.

He was a standout baseball player as a youth in Boston and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

He pitched for the Niagara Falls Pirates in the New York-Penn League for one season in 1975.

He coached youth baseball in the Town of Boston for several years.

A dedicated outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, canoeing and spending time at his cabin in Canada.

Memorials may be made to Roswell Park Cancer Institute or to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 6895 Boston Cross Road, Boston.

William R.Tobin Sr.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, June 23 from SS. Peter and Paul Church for William R. Tobin Sr., 79, of Hamburg, who died on Tuesday, June 19, 2012.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis (O’Connor) Tobin; children, Nelson (Diana) and William Jr. (Susan) Tobin and Cynthia (Mark) Wagner; siblings, Martin and David (Cathy) Tobin; and eight grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his siblings, Margerite, Clarence (Barbara) and Carl Tobin.

Mr. Tobin was a roll turner at Bethlehem Steel.

He was buried at SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery.

Stella Gawlak

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday (June 21) at Most Precious Blood Church for Stella (Kuras) Gawlak, 86, of Angola, who died on Tuesday, June 19, 2012.

She is survived by her children, Joanne (Norman) Gelster and Frank and Walter Gawlak; brother, Anthony (Eugenia) Kuras; grandchildren, Tarah (Jeff) Gammill, Frank, Melanie and Sonya Gelster; great-grandchildren, Cole, Gunner, Knox, Brooke, Logan, Madison and Terry; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Gawlak; her daughter, Roseanne Gawlak; and her siblings, Clara Rudny, Josephine Urbaniak, Dorothy Szwed and Richard Kuras.

Memorials may be made to either the Lake Erie Beach Volunteer Fire Department or Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

Albert Newman

A funeral service was held on Tuesday (June 26) from the Lakeside Memorial Funeral Home for Albert K. Newman of Lake View, who died on Saturday, June 23, 2012.

He is survived by his siblings, Irma (Daniel) Nowacki, Eleanor (late Raymond) Rutkowski, Carol (Donald) Evans, Elizabeth (Thomas) Wannop and Theodore (Judy) and Dale (Carol) Newman; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Albert H. and Ethel K. Newman; and brother, Robert (Judy) Newman.

Lorraine Kudelka

Burial services were held on Thursday (June 21) at SS. Cirilus and Methodius Czechoslovak Cemetery in Trenton, N.J. for Lorraine Kudelka, 84, of Reston, Va. and Hamburg, formerly of Trenton and Mercerville, N.J., who died on Sunday, June 10, 2012.

She is survived by her children, Lynne (Joseph) Bocchiaro and Lawrence (Diann) and Robert (Lesia) Kudelka; grandchildren, Christopher and Lia Bocchiaro and Jacqui, Danielle, William and Jonathan Kudelka; and nephew, Ken Parker.

She was predeceased by her husband, Methodi Kudelka; parents, Howard Charles and Kathyrn Parker; and brother, Howard Parker.

Mrs. Kudelka was a graduate of Trenton Central High School, Mercer County Community College, Trenton State College and Montclair State College where she received a masters of fine arts degree.

She was a past member of the Trenton Artists Workshop Association and her art has been featured in the Trenton City Museum at the Ellarslie Mansion. She enjoyed art, classical music, British mysteries and her travels to Lake Maggiore, Italy.

A memorial service will be held in Reston, Va. at a later date.

Marcia Szulgit

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday (June 25) from St. Mary of the Lake Church for Marcia E. (Edwards) Szulgit, 71, of Hamburg, who died on Thursday, June 21, 2012.

She is survived by her children, Karen A. Szulgit and Laura A. (Robert) Szulgit-Vergalito; siblings, William (Beverly) Edwards and Joyce (Leonard) Parzynski; grandchildren, Christopher and Dominick; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Richard E. Szulgit.

Mrs. Szulgit was a parts clerk at Southtowns Appliance.

She was interred in Lakeside Memorial Cemetery.

Arrangements were made through the John J. Kaczor Funeral Home.

Josephine Krencik

A private Memorial Mass was held for Josephine (Polonkiewicz) Krencik, 92, of North Boston, who died on Sunday, June 17, 2012.

She is survived by  her children, Arlene (Vincent) Weiss and Jerome (Betty) Krencik; her sister, Florence Nowak; and six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Krencik; her parents, Michael and Anna Polonkiewicz; her son, Joseph (Lucille) Krencik; and her siblings, Joseph, Walter, Anna, Martha, Mary and Rose.

Mrs. Krencik was an artist who loved traveling, hunting for antiques and cooking, but her greatest joy was her family. She has donated her body to science.

Memorials may be made to the Boston Emergency Squad.

Geraldine Casey

A memorial service was held on Saturday (June 23) from the John J. Kaczor Funeral Home for Geraldine L. (Evens) Casey, of Woodlawn, who died on Wednesday, June 20, 2012.

She is survived by her children, Christine Mortimer and Michael, Patrick (Cathy), Matthew and Timothy Evens; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Gail Casey.

Sophia Hammell

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday (June 26) at St. Francis of Assisi Church for Sophia (Jarlenski) Hammell, 81, of Eden, who died on Thursday, June 21, 2012.

She is survived by her children, Gregory (Lois) and Timothy Hammell; sister, Genevieve (Michael) Klemenich;  grandchildren, Jennifer, Vincent, Jacob and Elise Hammell; and two great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles M. Hammell; her son, Jeffrey Hammell; and brother Bronislaus (Camille) Jarlenski.
Mrs. Hammell was a school secretary at Pinehurst Elementary School.

She was interred in Lakeside Memorial Cemetery.

Arrangements were made through the John J. Kaczor Funeral Home.

Helen Ormsby

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 30 at noon from the Addison Funeral Home for Helen E. (Herold) Ormsby, 90, of Irving, formerly of Angola and Derby, who died on Friday, June 22, 2012.

She is survived by her children, Linda (Keith) Beam and Lester (Sonja Bacho) Ormsby; brother, Frederick (Joyce) Herold; and cat, ZuZu.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Ormsby.

Interment will be in Smith Mills Cemetery in Hanover.

Memorials may be made to the SPCA.

Delemear Mishanec

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, June 29 at 1 p.m. from SS. Peter and Paul Church for Delemear M. (McCabe) Mishanec of Hamburg, who died on Friday, June 22, 2012.

She is survived by her children, Richard Adamski and Andrea (Stephen) Bystran; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husbands, Stanley Adamski and Stephen Mishanec; and children, William (Dee) Adamski and Kathleen (Hal) Mermelstein.

Memorials may be made to SS. Peter and Paul Church Building Fund.

Diane Isula

Funeral services were held on Monday (June 25) from the Addison Funeral Home for Diane R. (Seymour) Isula, 69, of Forestville, formerly of Derby and Angola, who died on Thursday, June 21, 2012.

She is survived by her husband, James G. Isula; children, Penny (Frank) Muscato and James and Nicol Isula; sister, Cindy (Paul) Miller; nephew, John Uliaszek; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.
