David C. Wierzba
A Mass of Christian Burial was held from St. Mary’s Church, East Eden on Tuesday (April 29) for David C. Wierzba, of Hamburg, who died Saturday, April 26, 2008.
Mr. Wierzba is survived by his mother Dorothy (Mammoser) (Gib) Bauer; his daughter Jamie Lynn (Jon) Wilson; two brothers, Dennis (Gail) and Wayne Wierzba; three sisters, Karen (Dick) Johansen, Donna Newman, and Susan Miller; and his dearest companion of Lucy Blasz-Bieter; also survived by one granddaughter and other loving relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by his father Theodore Wierzba.
Mr. Wierzba was a U.S. Marine, serving in the military police.
He spent the last 20 years working as a diesel mechanic for Ryder Truck.
When he wasn’t working he enjoyed traveling, ocean cruises, races, casinos, golfing, and classic cars.
He was part of a national twin study for the past 39 years, a proud member of the American Legion in Hamburg, and a lifelong member of the AmVets, where he also served as an honor guard. He is remembered as a man who dedicated his life to his family, friends, God and country.

Mary Barrett
Funeral services were held from Our Mother of Good Counsel Church on Tuesday (May 6) for Mary (Beries) Barrett, of Blasdell, who died Friday, May 2, 2008.
Mrs. Barrett is survived by her son Joseph (late Judy) and her daughter Kathy (Jim) Waslela; also survived by seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Edward Barrett; her son Richard; two sisters, Margaret (late John) Hayer and Helen (late Stanley) Paulson; and two brothers, Steve (late Thelma) Beries and Michael (late Ann) Beries.

Willard Harmon
Word has been received of the death of Willard Mick Harmon, 75, of Bushnell, Fla., formerly of Derby, who died Monday, April 28, 2008 in Inverness, Fla.
Mr. Harmon is survived by his wife Madeline Harmon of Bushnell; his son Michael of Sarasota, Fla.; three daughters, Sharon Lounsbury of Salamanca, Linda Roch of Lockport, and Darlene Zimmy, of Largo, Fla.; his brother Robert Harmon of Spring Hill, Fla; and his sister Donna Harmon of Bushnell; also survived by 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents Willard and Velma Harmon of Derby and his brother Ernest Harmon of Bushnell.
Mr. Harmon served in Korea with the 70th Heavy Tank Battalion, earning a purple heart.
He then worked for Bethlehem Steel as an electrician for over 30 years, retiring to Florida in 1984.
Funeral arrangements were made through the Purcell Funeral Home, Bushnell.
Janet Millar
A Memorial service was held from the Hamburg Presbyterian Church on Monday (May 5) for Janet (Schutts) Millar, of Hamburg, who died Wednesday, April 30, 2008.
Mrs. Millar is survived by her son David C. (Siobhan) Millar; three daughters, Ann (Robert) Auerbach, Amy Millar, and Patricia (John) Thomas; her brother James Dougherty; and her sister Margery (Joe) Sheldon; also survived by six grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband David A. Millar Jr.; also predeceased by other brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Millar was a member of the Hamburg Garden Club and Friends of the Fair.
Funeral arrangements were made through the Loomis, Offers, and Loomis Funeral Home.
Frances Penque
A memorial service will be offered at 10 a.m. from the Holy Spirit Church, North Collins on Monday, May 12 for Frances (Petrone) Penque, 97, of North Collins, who died Wednesday, April 7, 2008.
Mrs. Penque is survived by three daughters, Teresa (late Charles) Dipiazza; Patricia (John) Romans, and Jacqueline (Richard) Doll; and her sister Alice Ambrose; also survived by eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Salvatore Penque; and her daughter Sally Penque; also survived by one brother and four sisters.
Mrs. Penque was a former member of the Rosary Altar Society and North Collins Senior Citizens.
Funeral arrangements were made through the Wentland Funeral Home with burial in Holy Spirit Cemetery.
Lois C. Hughes
Funeral services were held from the John J. Kaczor Funeral Home in Hamburg on Thursday (May 1) for Lois C. Hughes, 80, of Derby, who died Sunday, April 27, 2008.
Mrs. Hughes is survived by many loving cousins and dear friends.
She was predeceased by her parents Raymond G. and Evelyn (Meyers) Hughes.
Mrs. Hughes was a retired art teacher from Fairbanks, Alaska.
Ann Bernardin
A Memorial service will be held from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May Lucia M. Guida
for Ann Bernardin, 99, of Hamburg, who died Thursday, May 1, 2008.
Mrs. Bernardin is survived by her daughter Eileen (the Rev. Fred) Jacobi and her son George E. (Linda) Bernardin; also survived by five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband George M. Bernardin and her brother Theodore Gloisten.
Mrs. Bernardin spent most of her life on Long Island. She worked as a secretary on Wall Street and as an executive secretary for a pharmaceutical firm.
She was also an avid traveler. Since moving to Hamburg she had resided at both Rosewood Village and the Hamburg Health Care Center.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Eden.
Funeral arrangements were made through the Laing Funeral Home in Eden. Burial will be in Middle Village, NY at a later date.
Jeannette Catalano
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held from St. Vincent dePaul Church in North Evans at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 17 for Jeannette S. (Lanser) Catalano, of Derby, who died Monday, April 28, 2008.
Mrs. Catalano is survived by her son Robert M. Catalano; her daughter Judy (Joseph) Kromer; and her sister Adella Cook; also survived by six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Mariano “Babe” Catalano Jr.
Mrs. Catalano had the distinction of being one of the first female Postmasters appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1943. She served as the Derby Post Master for 34 years.

Kenneth Burrows
Word has been received of the death of Kenneth Burrows, 59, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., formerly of Hamburg, who died Sunday, April 27, 2008 after a long battle with cancer.
Mr. Burrows is survived by his step-father Harry Wicks.
Mr. Burrows was born December 6, 1948 and was a 1966 graduate of Hamburg High School.
He was an art teacher in the Murfreesboro Public Schools.
Lavonne J. Caggeso
A Mass of Christian Burial was held from SS Peter and Paul Church in Hamburg on Monday (May 5) for Lavonne J. “Bonnie” (Distler) Caggeso, 75, of Hamburg, who died Monday, April 28, 2008.
Mrs. Caggeso is survived by her husband of 55 years, Anthony Caggeso; three daughters, Victoria (Philip) Markert, Patricia and Susan (James Hatch) Caggeso; and three brothers, James (Joan), William (Carmela), and Ronald (Julie) Distler; also survived by four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her brother Wallace (Doris) Distler.
Mrs. Casseso was a former baker at Quality Markets in Hamburg.
Burial is in Lakeside Memorial Park.

Paul A. Calarco Jr.
Funeral services were held from SS Peter and Paul Church on Monday (May 5) for Paul A. Calarco Jr., 76, of Hamburg, who died Thursday, May 1, 2008.
Mr. Calarco is survived by his children Michael (Laura) and Jymie Calarco; and his sister Angela (Ronald) Eckert; also survived by three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife Joan (Clark) and his brother Dominic (Antoinette) Calarco.
Mr. Calarco was a retired supervisor with the U.S. Postal Service.
Burial is in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Lucia M. Guida
A Mass of Christian Burial was held from St. Joseph’s Cathedral on Monday (May 5) for Lucia M. (Cullis) Guida, 87, of Hamburg, who died Friday, May 2, 2008.
Mrs. Guida is survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Anthony J. Guida, six sisters, and two brothers.

Betty Waddell
Funeral services were held from the Lakeside Funeral Home on Saturday (May 3) for Betty Albright Waddell, 83, of Angola, who died suddenly on Monday, April 28, 2008.
Mrs. Waddell is survived by her husband Ernest J. Waddell Jr.; four daughters, Elizabeth, Jacqueline (Dr. James) Menke, Carol (David) Sheets, and Ann Waddell; and three sons, Ernest !!! “Sam” (Rose), Donald (Debora), and David Waddell; also survived by 14 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

John J. Viehmann

Mr. Viehmann is survived by his wife Mary Anne (Mahaney) and other loving family members.
He was predeceased by his parents Frank and Eleanor Viehmann; and four sisters, Kay (late Ronald) Byers, Carol (Arthur) Schmidle, Ellen (late James) Hayes, and Patricia (Charles) Incorvaia; also survived by 16 nieces and nephews, several great-nieces and nephews and cousins.

John Ciolek Jr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 16 from St. Vincent’s Church, North Evans for John Ciolek Jr., of Newton, NC, formerly of Hamburg, who died Wednesday, April 30, 2008.
Mr. Ciolek is survived by his wife Marian (Kazmierczak); two sons, Larry (Lynne) and Leonard ((Julie) Ciolek; his daughter Linda (William) Davis; and his brother Alan (Kathy); also survived by seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and nieces, nephews, and other loving family members.
Friends can visit at the Lakeside Funeral Home, 4199 Lakeshore Road in Hamburg on Thursday May 15 from 6 to 9 p.m.
