A millennium celebration has turned into a 13-year tradition. The Blast on the Beach will be held in Hamburg on Saturday, July 27.
“It went over so well, it was requested they do it every year,” said Laura Hahn, co-chair of the Hamburg Rejuvenation Committee. Hahn has been working with that group since 1998.
The Hamburg Rejuvenation Committee is an all-volunteer, Hamburg committee. It was formed in 1994. Its members are from the villages of Hamburg and Blasdell, town business community members and local residents.
The group’s stated goal is to improve the quality of life for local residents. Its motto is “Working today for a better Hamburg tomorrow.”
“I enjoyed the interaction with other members of the community and I’ve been on it ever since,” Hahn said.
The committee holds three events: a town-wide cleanup on at the beginning of May, Christmas in the Cabin on the first of December and the Blast on the Beach, which takes place the last Saturday in July.
The committee members said that they strive to keep Hamburg lively, with these events. The Blast on the Beach takes advantage of the summer sunshine and the Hamburg Town Park, in which the event is held.
Attendees may bring a picnic lunch. Food vendors will serve fried dough, hot dogs, pizza and more. Hahn said that, to continue the family-friendly atmosphere, no alcohol will be served.
Activities and entertainment will take place, throughout the day. The event will feature bounce houses for the kids, swimming, water craft rides and a volleyball tournament.
A hot dog-eating contest, sponsored by Longboards, will take place at the beach. Registration is required for the contest and participants may enter by calling the town clerk or Longboards.
Lance Diamond and his band are back, by request, according to Hahn. Early in the evening, a local band Rescue Dawn will be perform, from 4 – 6 p.m.
A firework display, sponsored by Skylighters, will light up the sky after dark. In case of rain, the fireworks show will take place the following night. Hahn said that the committee has been “lucky” and has never had to cancel the display.
Fisher Bus Service is sponsoring the event and will provide shuttle service, from the Lake Shore Little League building at 4928 Rogers Road, beginning at 4 p.m.
The event is sponsored by local establishments and business, including the Fairgrounds Gaming and Raceway, Appolson’s Performance Center, Fisher Bus Service, Drescher & Malecki LLP, E.F. Burke Company, Benderson Development Co., TOPS Market, McAllister Plumbing Heating and Cooling, M&T Bank, R&P Oak Hill LLC and more.
The Blast on the Beach will occur on Saturday, July 27 at the Hamburg Town Park, located at 4420 Lake Shore Road.
