HAMBURG — The city will meet the Southtowns on Saturday, Aug. 31, for “a day at the beach and a night at the shore,” when multiple disc jockeys will take the stage at Woodlawn Beach for a labor day weekend party, hosted by MNM Presents.
Before Mike Marshall became sole owner of MNM Presents, a Buffalo promotion company, he was a Derby resident. “Hamburg was very, very cool,” said Marshall, a graduate of Hamburg High School. “I liked Hamburg. I had a really good time going there.”
Since 2001, he has brought an extensive amount and variety of music acts to Buffalo and occasionally Rochester.
In addition to exposing and entertaining the area with national acts, Marshall emphasized the significance of promoting local. For the upcoming A Labor Day Wknd Beach Party, he said he is aiming to showcase the area’s best talent that would perform a set most appropriate for a shore-inspired atmosphere.
Marshall said that he was attracted to Woody’s Beach Club and Taquería’s venue as the scene of the event, for a variety of reasons.
“It’s the only place anywhere around here that has a bar and a stage directly on the sand,” he said. Woody’s will provide the taquería’s menu of various Mexican foods, while also offering typical American concessions for those who may want just a cheeseburger and fries.
The scene will also include VIP cabanas, a volleyball net and a beach-side fire pit. Marshall will be bringing in sky lanterns as a feature for the night-owl attendees. The Buffalo Hula Hoop Group will showcase its skills. Fellow hoopers may bring their hoops and work on new techniques with the group.
WOOP WOOP – Steve Brown and Dom Calvello from Niagara Falls are the duo who comprise SwaggleRock, in addition to their solo alias projects: Calvello as Shooter McNappin and Cloud 11; Brown as Buzz Trillington and 222 Oceans.
The lineup includes some of the city’s DJs, including SwaggleRock, comprised by duo 222 Oceans and Cloud 11; Brandon Chase; DJ LoPro and Universal performing, back-to-back; Hamburg native DJ Brother Bear; Rufus Gibson; The Owski; and Rochester’s Papi Chulo.
“This is definitely a city-style event that’s happening in the Southtowns,” Marshall said.
Since the event will run from 4 p.m. – 2 a.m., it gives leniency for those who attend. “They can come at night or they can just come during the day,” Marshall said. “Or they can do both.” The transition of sun to moon on the beach is an aspect Marshall said is very attractive about the event.
Sound will be provided by BDNB, which can often be found at drum n’ bass shows in the city. Not only will there be a view of Buffalo’s skyline across the water, but the evening will also feature lasers and lights, after the sun goes down.
“I am really looking forward to playing in such a cool spot,” said Brandon Chase, a DJ scheduled to perform. “Tucker Curtain has worked so hard at creating this amazing venue for us to party at. Beers, beats and beaches: what more could I ask for?”
Marshall said that he is hoping for approximately 200 people to attend and has worked to keep the event inexpensive. Before 6 p.m., entry is free; cover charge information may be found on the event’s Facebook event page. Parking will be free after 6. If all goes well, he said that he hopes to make this an annual event.
“It’s nice to see so many key players in the local Buffalo music scene make their way to a venue in the Southtowns,” said Jake Broffman, performing under his moniker “Brother Bear.” He is a Hamburg resident and Canisius High School graduate. “Living in Hamburg is great, but having to make the trip to the city constantly to both DJ and attend events can be a bit much, sometimes. I would love to see this become a somewhat regular occurrence.”
Woody’s Beach Club and Taquería is located at 3580 Lake Shore Road in Blasdell. More information about the event may be found at www.facebook.com/events/144888069048759.
