The Erie County Wind Ensemble visited Angola’s Summer Lawn Chair Concert series on Aug. 6, with a patriotic set.
ANGOLA — On Aug. 6, the eighth entry in Angola’s Summer Lawn Chair Concert series commenced at 7 p.m. in the village’s Centennial Park under clear and sunny skies for a performance by the Erie County Wind Ensemble.
This installment in the free concert series was sponsored by the Lake Shore Central Teacher’s Association.
“We’re thrilled to be here once again,” said the Erie County Wind Ensemble conductor John Iako, before the concert began. “It’s been a couple years since we have been here, and it’s a wonderful location to perform at.”
With that, the wind ensemble kicked off its performance with a ceremonial rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner,” followed by the band’s take on Rossano Galante’s “Landscapes.”
The evening continued with a diverse mix of traditional, patriotic selections such as John Philip Sousa’s “Washington Post March,” George M. Cohan’s “Patriotic Fantasy” and Samuel Ward’s “America the Beautiful,” along with a number of pieces like Karl King’s “Barnum and Bailey’s Favorite,” as well as musical medleys from “Fiddler on the Roof” and George Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess.”
Carrying on with the patriotic theme in its set, the Erie County Wind Ensemble performed the “Armed Forces Salute” in the first half of the concert, during which the themes from each branch of the United States military was played. Those in the audience who served in the armed forces were asked to stand and be recognized by their fellow attendees as the theme of their branch was played.
After a two-hour-long performance with a brief intermission, the Erie County Wind Ensemble ended the evening with a rendition of Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever.”
Along with the weekly ticket raffle, 50/50 and concessions sales, those present also had the opportunity to support Angola’s local Friends of the Village organization by entering to win a handmade quilt that will be given away during the final performance in this year’s run of summer concerts. Tickets for this raffle will continue to be sold during each of the remaining shows, this summer.
The 32nd Summer Lawn Chair Concert Series is presented by the Angola Parks and Gazebo Committee, Evans Recreation and the village of Angola and will continue to be held every Wednesday this summer in Centennial Park with the New Angola Theater as a back-up rain location. The 2014 series will reach its conclusion on Aug. 27 when musical guests the Frankfurters take the stage under the William G. Houston Gazebo.
Next week’s concert will take place on Aug. 13 and feature a performance by the Music Krew, in a show sponsored by the Evans Bank and the Evans Agency. The following concert will see a performance of the Johnny Cash tribute band, the Men in Black.
