Sun Seven H.S. Girls Basketball: Immaculata’s Fitzner closing in on 1,000 points
Immaculata Academy bounced back from a loss against one tough opponent by beating another difficult foe. Off a 67-58 loss on the road at Nichols on Jan. 26, the Bears knocked off ECIC Division II front-runner Williamsville East 66-55 two days later.

Senior forward Jill Fitzner led all scorers with 25 points and nine rebounds, while fellow front-line starter Lindsay Nowak, a junior, turned in 10 points, 17 rebounds and three steals. Megan Smith also chipped in seven points, four rebounds and an assist. Fitzner is now just 22 points shy of 1,000 for her high school career and will have a chance to surpass the mark Thursday, Feb. 4 when Immaculata (11-7 overall) hosts Mt. Mercy or Saturday, Feb. 6 at local rival Frontier. Fitzner has been scoring at a torrid pace, also posting 23 points, along with 10 rebounds and three steals, in the loss to Nichols. In that game, Nowak also posted a double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds, to go with three blocks.

Additionally, the Bears will sponsor a Coaches vs. Cancer basketball event on Tuesday, Feb. 9 when they host Holland. The junior varsity tip-off will be 5 p.m. and varsity at 6:30 p.m. inside the gymnasium at 5138 South Park Ave. in Hamburg. All proceeds from the game will go to benefit The American Cancer Society and Coaches vs. Cancer. The event, coordinated and organized by the sports marketing class at Immaculata, will feature a 50/50 raffle, half-court shot challenge, Chinese auction and concessions. Last year’s event raised nearly $800.

Eden close to reaching yet another goal for program

Eden has already checked off three of the five goals the team made at the start of the season. Number four can be checked off this week.

With a second win over Lackawanna in less than a week, the Raiders can clinch the outright ECIC IV regular season title for the first time in 21 years with a win over second-place Holland on Thursday, Feb. 4. It also happens to be the team’s final home game and Senior Night. The Raiders, now 8-0 in ECIC Division IV play and 12-1 overall, also hosted Cleveland Hill two days earlier.

The Raiders inched closer to the title by winning at Lackawanna 60-44 on Jan. 27. After finishing the first quarter tied at 12 apiece, Eden outscored the host 21-11 in the second which would basically be the margin of victory. The teams traded baskets for most of the remainder of the contest. Lackawanna came as close as 10 points in the fourth but Eden held there ground.

In the win, Hailee Herc finished with 18 points and eight rebounds; Jenna Phillips notched 15 points, including four 3-pointers, and six assists and Hannah Herc added 13 points and 16 rebounds.

“It was pretty much the same style of game as our first game against Lackawanna,” Eden head coach Marissa Fallacaro noted. “In the second quarter we really pushed the ball and made some nice cuts, passes and finishes and the defense started to shut down Lackawanna’s baseline drives.”

Also locally, Frontier had gotten itself right back in the ECIC Division II race for a regular season title with four consecutive wins, but the Falcons hopes took a hit with a 74-68 loss at home to Jamestown on Jan. 29. In the loss, senior guard Kelsey Osborne scored 15 of her 20 points in the second half and finished with four 3-pointers. Freshman forward Natalie Galus also recorded 20 points for the Falcons. The Falcons, now 5-4 in ECIC Division I and 8-5 overall, host cross-town rival Hamburg (4-4 ECIC I, 4-6 overall) for a second time this regular season on Friday, Feb. 5.

Lake Shore knocked off West Seneca East 48-41 on Jan. 29 behind 10 points from sophomore Jessica Ludwig. Also for Lake Shore, Katherine Caboot finished with eight points and Brittany Mazzu and Allisa Schmidt added seven. The Eagles ended an eight-game losing streak, improving to 3-11 overall and 2-8 in ECIC Division II.
