Sun High School Wrap: Radon, Konikoff help Section VI gymnasts take second at states
Frontier junior Nicole Radon took second in the all-around and Hamburg junior Elise Konikoff placed ninth to guide Section VI to a second-place finish behind Section I at the State Championships on Feb. 28 in Cold Spring Harbor in Long Island. The meet was delayed one day due to inclement weather.
Radon scored a 37.50 to finish just behind Section I’s Jillian Hudson (37.85). The Section VI all-around champion during the fall season placed second on bars (9.625), third on floor (9.425) and vault (9.4) and 12th on beam (8.9). Konikoff held her own, finishing third among Section VI athletes competing, with a 35.475. She also had finished third at the Section VI Championships. Her individual performances included a third on beam with a 9.25, seventh on floor with a 9.35 and 14th on vault with an 8.8. She also recorded an 8.1 on bars.
Frontier’s Kelsey Kryszak also competed for Section VI, which scored a team total of 179.125. Section VI finished first on beam of the nine other sections competing, in addition to taking second on floor and third on vault and bars.
Zittel betters breaststroke
Eden junior Kyle Zittel was the only local to qualify for the state swimming championships, competing there in the 100 breaststroke and 50 freestyle events, but was unable to qualify for the finals in either. Though, in the preliminary round, Zittel did finish 26th in breaststroke in 1:01.26, bettering his season-best of 1:01.74. He moved up from his original 33rd seed in the event.
Brucker qualifies for states
Hamburg’s indoor track and field recorded 24 personal best efforts led by state-qualifier Ben Brucker at the Section VI Championships held Feb. 27 at Fredonia State College. Brucker earned the trip to compete as part of the Intersectional relay at the state championships on March 6 at Cornell, by virtue of his personal best 1,000 meters of 2:42.15, which earned him fourth place.
Jared Brucker equalled his personal best of 12-feet with a fourth place in the pole vault. Maggie Hewitt also had a fourth in vault with a personal best 9-foot, 6-inch effort. Megan Lesch improved her long jump by five inches and finished fourth losing out on the last jump. The Bruckers, Moe Lauchert and Tim Morris earned Hamburg’s other sectional place award with personal bests all-around in the 4x400 meter relay to finish fourth.
Other local competitors of note include Frontier’s Amanda Olsen, Lauren Courtade, Emily Krasinski and Renae Sweeney, who formed the winning 4x800 relay which finished in 9:54.30 and Lake Shore’s Kimberly Vona, who won the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:12.5 in a race that was inadvertently ended a lap early. Joining those two in qualifying for the state championships among local girls was Frontier’s Rebecca Love in the 1500 meters after finishing second in 4:57.09. Also, taking third from Frontier were Allyson Hubble in the shot put with a 36-3.75 and Rachel Stocklosa in the triple jump with a 35-3. For the boys, Frontier’s 4x200 relay finished second in 1:38.57, while taking third were Lee Swaydis in the 3200 meters (10:06.14) and Cody Zampella in the shot put (47-9.75).
