SPRINGVILLE — The junior varsity wrestlers from Springville-Griffith Institute went into North Tonawanda on Dec. 15 and three of the Griffins came out, having made their mark. Bryce “Scuba” Szudzik won first place, by pinning his Attica opponent in 3 minutes.
In addition, Szudzik pinned an opponent from Lewiston-Porter in the first round and, later, won in the semifinals, against an Iroquois challenger.
Springville’s Zach Swank went head-to-head with Iroquois’s Justin Hoffman and pinned him, for a third-place finish. The other Griffin to place was Noah Snyder, who came in fourth, by pinning Kenmore West’s Dorian Daniels.
The Griffins were home against Maryvale on Wednesday, Dec. 19. A tournament that was originally scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 27 at Maryvale High School was canceled, but a competition was held at the same location, the following day, for Springville’s next contest.
So far this season, the wrestling team is 0 – 4, with losses to Lackawanna 59 – 24, on Nov. 28; Alden 60–18, on Dec. 5; Depew 54 – 27, on Dec. 7 and Tonawanda 61 – 17, on Dec. 12.
The next season contest will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 9, when the Griffins take to the road for East Aurora. That match will be held at the East Aurora High School at 7 p.m.
