BIG SAVES — Jared Lux of Hamburg High made some key saves to salvage one point for the Caz Chiefs in recent action.
The definition of the word “lux” is a unit of illumination. Goaltender Jared Lux of Hamburg High lit the way for the Cazenovia Chiefs Bantam travel team to earn a 2 – 2 draw with the visiting Olean Arrows on Feb. 1 at the Timothy J. Burvid Rink in South Buffalo. Lux made 36 saves, including some of the highlight variety, to help the Chiefs salvage a point.
Slow starts have been the mantra of the Chiefs this season, and this contest would follow a similar theme. The Arrows struck just a little over a minute into the first period for a 1-0 advantage. Instead of wilting under Olean’s early pressure, the Chiefs responded at the 9:16 mark of the first. Ryan Kasniak of West Seneca West Middle scored off some hard work from Ryan Galley (SS. Peter & Paul’s) and Evan Rabent for the 1 – 1 tie.
In a physical game the rest of the way, the Arrows hit the mark beating Lux with a bit more than 2 minutes left in the contest, for a late 2 – 1 lead. But defensive play by Tim Tyszko and call-up Jake Maciejewski helped the Chiefs get one more chance at garnering a positive result.
As the clock continued to tick down, Lux was called upon to make one more save on a breakaway. The puck was sent to safety and the save was the catalyst for the finish.
Lux raced to the bench for the extra attacker, as the Chiefs set up shop in the Olean end of the rink. With 22 seconds remaining on the clock, Alex Kimball of Orchard Park converted an assist from Josh Kacalski of Frontier Middle and Carl Rolston to earn the tie.
