College Athletics Report: Larson’s pitching leads Fredonia to win

The Fredonia State baseball team downed visiting New Paltz 7-1 on Monday (April 15) at Ludwig Field.
Starting pitcher Sean Larson of Angola threw seven shutout innings, and the Devil offense opened the game with four first-inning runs to propel them to victory. Larson, a St. Francis High School graduate who improved to 2-1 on the season, scattered three hits, while walking two and striking out three.
Simoncelli slugs D’Youville to a sweep of Medaille
Behind Eric Simoncelli’s two home runs D’Youville swept a doubleheader over Medaille on April 15 for the first time since May 1, 2001.
In D’Youville’s Game One 5-3 win, Simoncell of Hamburg hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning of a 3-3 game to account for the game-winning run. Simoncelli would add a solo shot in a 3-0 second game win for D’Youville. The Hamburg High School graduate finished the day with three RBI. Brent Gibbs fired a one-hitter in Game Two.
D’Youville improved to 4-10 overall and 2-4 in the AMCC.
ECC rides Barry to winning three of four in two days
Sophomore Brian Barry of Derby tossed a one-hitter and had a pair of doubles to lead the Erie Community College baseball team to a 16-1 win over Jamestown CC in the nightcap of Monday’s (April 15) Region III doubleheader.
Despite a first-inning grand slam by Barry, JCC used an 11-run third inning to pick up a 17-10 win in the opener.
The Lake Shore High School graduate capped a two-day tear at the plate, which also included four hits and four RBI the day prior to help ECC to a sweep of Niagara CCC.
ECC is now 18-12 on the season and head coach Joe Bauth is one win shy of 800 career victories.
In the nightcap against JCC, the Kats scored eight times in the second inning and added four runs in both the fourth and fifth frames.
Barry notched a pair of doubles, while Vinny Sherman of North Collins added three hits and Nick Caboot of Derby had two hits. Caboot, also a Lake Shore graduate, drove in three runs. Barry also struck out 10.
On April 14, Barry drove in four runs in ECC’s 9-5 win over Jamestown CC in the opener of the Region III doubleheader Sunday. Barry added a single and a double in Game Two as the Kats recorded six extra-base hits in ECC’s 10-0 win.
Barry had a two-run home run in the fourth inning and added a two-run double in the sixth. ECC scored twice in the first inning.
Austin Zakroczemski, a St. Francis High School graduate, added a two-run triple. A triple by Vinny Sherman scored his brother, Kyle Sherman after the North Collins High School graduate had singled. Kyle notched two hits in the game.
In Game Two, Caboot gave ECC a quick 2-0 lead after a double in the second inning and the crossed the plate on a triple. He later added a two-run double.
