Springville-Griffith Institute football program honored for academic achievements

SPRINGVILLE — The Springville-Griffith Institute varsity and junior varsity football teams were recently honored for their work, in and out of the classroom.
The varsity team together racked up a 92.39 grade point average, for the 2012 school year. This is the third consecutive year in which Springville’s varsity team has had an average of more than a 90 GPA, as a team.
S-GI has also qualified for the Scholar Athlete Team Award. This designation is presented to varsity athletic teams which earn a 90 percent or higher average, during an athletic season.
The New York State Public High School Athletic Association established this team award in 1991, with the statement that student athlete participation enhances academic performance.
Members of the Springville football program congratulated many players, for being a “Griff-In” the classroom, during the second marking period, by making the merit or honor roll.
Merit roll members include Colin DeWitt, Justin DeWitt, Eric Garlock, Nick Hintz, Parker Rice, Zack Swank, Jake Moroge, Devin Pazzuti, Bobby Fisher, Andy Suffoletto, Lucas Ballowe, Nick Benstead, Nic Czora and Justin Willibey.
Honor roll member athletes included Colton Beres, Pat Hannon, Billy Harbison, Greyson Louth, Dalton Nelson, Jake Smith, Rick Sutton, Kyle Schultz, Bryce Stedman, Matt Adams, Brandon Ball, Ethan Benz, Drew Scharra, Nate Wolcott, Aaron Byrne, Dave DeLuca, Bill Dickinson and Brian Seneca.
Dickinson was also recognized as part of the 2012 Western New York all academic football team.
Varsity football Coach John Sopko said that he is proud of all of these recipients, for their hard academic work. “Its important to know that these student athletes put the time in and worked hard in the classroom,” he said.
“To receive the Scholar Athlete Award for the third consecutive year is a very special honor, for our program,” the coach added.
