SPRINGVILLE — Springville-Griffith Institute cross-country runner Jess Wojtkowiak competed in the Runner’s Roost/Checkers Invitational on Sunday, Nov. 18.
The race was held on the Elma Meadows Golf Course, the same course that was used for the recent cross country state meet and for sectionals.
Wojtkowiak became eligible for the race, by winning runner of the week recognition in week three of the cross-country season. Each week, seven girls and seven boys, within Section 6, are given this award. Those chosen athletes are then invited to an all-star meet, at the end of the season.
With a time of 20:13, Wojtkowiak finished sixth, in the girls race, out of nearly 80 all runners in attendance. She ran at this course for sectionals and made a 40-second improvement over her last visit to that course.
Wojtkowiak has recently made the move from soccer to cross-country and finished as the Lady Griffins’ top runner.
“She ran a very smart race. She started back in the pack and, about a mile into the race, a group that she went with started to pull away from the rest of the girls,” said Wojtkowiak’s coach, Chad Russell.
“About two miles in, the pack was down to six, with Jessica in that lead group,” Russell added.
“In the end, she took sixth place, behind some very impressive runners. This was a great end to a strong season for Jessica, who is just a junior and has another year to improve on her already-impressive cross-country resume.”
