The 12-and-under Hamburg Monarchs boys soccer team moved into sole possession of first place of its BWNYJSL division with a 7-2 victory over the Lake Shore Lightning on May 16 at Wendt Beach.
Josh Kacalski opened the scoring in the game’s 22nd minute off a nice feed by Gabe Mastrangelo. Before the first half finished, leading scorer Kyle Ingraham added two more goals for a 3-0 Hamburg lead. Midfielders Ryan Sutton, Will McGowan, Tony Tuber controlled possession and helped create multiple opportunities. Defensively, Nick Sobczak, Alex Roth, and Isaiah O’Connor stood out in front of keeper Andrew Lauria, who made some standout saves.
Jonah Kozak scored seven minutes into the second frame off a Kacalski set up, before a perfect corner kick by Seth Heeter gave Hamburg a 5-0 lead. After the Lightning closed the gap to 5-2 with less than 10 minutes remaining, Kozak and Matt Clifford found the back of the net. Mike Lange and Jared Rasinski displayed some skill and sportsmanship as they turned scoring opportunities into well placed passes.
