The Hamburg Hawks AA Pee-Wee Major team won the Three Rivers Cup Tournament on Feb. 17 in Pittsburgh. The Hawks won all five games they played and defeated the Elyria Panthers from Ohio in the championship game 6-2 to take home the cup.
The Hawks displayed tremendous team defense, character and grit as three of the games were decided by one goal and another by two. Hawks goalie Noah Webster was the MVP of the tournament, posting an impressive 1.60 goals against. Webster played the entire tournament due to an injury to goalie Eli Dunkle. Webster stood strong and handled the pressure by making big saves toward the end of each of the three one-goal victories.
David Hayes led a balanced Hawks scoring attack with 5 goals including the game winner in the championship game. Seven different Hawk forwards scored. The strength of the team came from a shorthanded defensive foursome. Due to vacations and injuries the Hawks only dressed 4 defensemen for the tournament. The group of Josh Pavlovich, Brandon Pudlewski, Will Sanchioni and Jacob Donaldson were virtually flawless in each game.
Coach Jeff Sortisio said he was most proud of how the team responded under pressure as the Hawks found themselves behind 1 – 0 in each of the final three games.
