Gowanda Sports Report
Saturday February 1, 2014 | By:Mark Benton | Sports
Recent correspondence was received from Joe Dittenhofer, a 1978 Gowanda Central School graduate. Dittenhofer resides in Bellbrook, Ohio.
In the spring of 1978, as a member of the GCS boys' Track and Field team, Dittenhofer ran the 440-yard dash in 51.2, just missing tying the school record by one-tenth of a second. The feat was performed on a cinder track. Had Dittenhofer run on an all-weather track surface like today's athletes, he may have broken the 50-second mark. He remembers his coach, Vince Karnath, being quite pleased after the race.
Bruce Bareham, GCS Class of 1975, was recently notified by the Western New York Wrestling Coaches Association that his father, Ernest Bareham, will be inducted posthumously into their coaches "Hall of Fame" on Sunday, March 9. The banquet and awards ceremony will take place at Ilio DiPaolo's' restaurant in Blasdell beginning at noon. Ernie Bareham guided the GCS wrestling team to seven Section VI titles during his 15 years coaching the sport for the Panthers.
