Springville-GI competes in track meet

The Springville-Griffith Institute track team, coached by Joseph Marvin, was back in action on Saturday, Feb. 18 at the State University of New York at Fredonia. Out of the group from Springville, Brian McNerney took a first place finish, winning the 1,000-meter with a time of 2:47.3. In addition, he came in fourth in the 1,600. His time in that race was 4:53.1.

Freshman Joe Cocina had his best mark of the season in the 3,200, finishing with a time of 11:12.6.

The team had a few second-place competitors, as well. McKenzie Maloy had a time of 11:33.4 in the 3,000, which also qualified her for a sectional meeting. Brooke Reed, also a sectional qualifier at the end of the day, ran a 1.45.5 in the 600. In the high jump, Tom Michaels finished second as well, with a jump of 5 feet 8 inches.

Also competing in the high jump was Cody Schweickert, who finished in third place, just behind Michaels, at 5 feet 6 inches.

Evan Brand had a third place 46-foot, 8-inch mark in the shot put. Kelsey Imhoff finished fifth in the race walk with a time of 10:57.4.

The athletes were scheduled to be back in competition on Thursday, Feb. 23. After that, a state meet is scheduled for Monday, March 5 in Cornell. The time of that match was undetermined at press time.
