Skate Great to offer program in Hamburg

Skate Great will be holding a Learn to Skate/Beginner Hockey program at several Western New York ice rinks, including at the Hamburg Town Arena on 2982 Lakeview Road, beginning Oct. 2. Using the United States Figure Skating Basic Skills Program and being sanctioned by USA Hockey, the program is geared toward serving the needs of both recreational and competitive figure skaters and has a stated goal of providing a foundation of fundamental skating and hockey skills to its attendees. An open house will be held Sunday, Sept. 22 from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. at the Hamburg Town Arena. Skate for free between 10 and 11 a.m. Skates are available to borrow at both locations, but quantity and sizes are limited. Skate Great is one of 11 skating programs in the country to have more than 1,000 skaters. Hamburg basketball to hold youth clinic

The Hamburg boys basketball program will be holding a “Junior Dogs” fundamental basketball clinic for boys grades in third – sixth grade in the Hamburg School District. The clinic will run for eight consecutive Saturdays, beginning Sept. 21 from 10 – 11:30 a.m. for third and fourth graders and 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. for fifth and sixth graders at the Hamburg Wesleyan Church. The cost of the clinic includes instruction from the Bulldog coaching staff, as well as the opportunity for the “Junior Dogs” to play games at halftime of all Hamburg home games, this season. Buffalo Wings 16-U baseball to hold tryout

The Buffalo Wings travel baseball program will be conducting tryouts for the 2014 16-and-younger team on Sunday, Sept. 1 at noon and Saturday, Sept. 7 at 4 p.m., both at Cazenovia Park in South Buffalo. Organizers have asked that prospective players attend both tryouts, if possible. The Wings are comprised of players from all areas of Western New York. Next year, the team will compete in the WNY Boys of Summer Travel League, as well as numerous tournaments in and outside the Western New York area. Players with previous travel and tournament team experience are asked by event organizers to attend. Hilbert College baseball clinic Sept. 28

The Hilbert College fall 2013 baseball clinic will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28 with sessions for boys ages 7 – 12 and 13 – 17 at the college on 5200 South Park Ave. in Hamburg. Session I (for ages 7 – 12) will run from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. and Session II (for ages 13 – 17) will be held from noon – 3 p.m. Instructors include Hawks’ Head Baseball Coach Jim Pernick, assistant coaches and Hilbert players. Registration open for youth travel baseball

The Hamburg Junior Baseball League and the village of Hamburg Recreation Department will be holding open tryouts for boys baseball players who are interested in playing travel baseball in 2014. Tryouts will be held at Legion Field in the village of Hamburg the week of Monday – Sunday, Sept. 16 – 22. There will be tryouts for the following age groups; 8-, 9-, 10-, 11-, 12-, 13- and 14-and-younger. Upper Deck to hold fall ball league

The third annual Upper Deck Fall Instructional League for young people ages 10 – 12 and advanced 9-year-olds will begin its eight weeks of play Sept. 8 and run through Oct. 27. This instructional league will include traditional games, clinics and mini games played once a day per week, on Sunday mornings. Mini Games are Olympic-style activities that help participants practice baseball specific skills. Games and events will be held at Lakeshore Little League from 9 – 11 a.m. on Rodgers Road. The registration deadline is Aug. 30. The league will be coached by Mark Messina, a former minor leaguer and Division 1 collegiate player, and Danny Conrad, also a former Division 1 collegiate player.
