The Upper Deck Dragons went 5 – 0 against stiff competition in the season-ending Buffalo Wings Summer Bash Tournament. All of the highest-ranked teams from Buffalo, Syracuse, Rochester, Utica and Erie, Pa. met for the final tournament of the summer baseball season.
The Dragons beat the WNY Titans 12 – 4 and 10 – 4, Bradford Drillers 9 – 6, New Era Blue 16 – 4 and Academy Stars 6 – 2, en route to becoming champions. The five games featured solid pitching from seven players and a near error-free defense that allowed only 20 runs against powerhouse teams. The team racked up 53 runs, made special by each player’s recording at least one hit, run and RBI.
The total team effort helped the Dragons finish with an overall record of 36 – 14, with only four of those loses coming to local teams.
The Buffalo Wings Baseball Tournament founder Tim Crowley died from cancer, shortly after the conclusion of the tournament. The teams and athletes agreed that Crowley will be missed by the entire Western New York baseball community.
