SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS — The James R. Owen Scholar/Athlete Cross Country Scholarship Award, named in honor of Hamburg’s former running coach, were Jake Wojnicki, with Owen, and Leah Covelli.
At Hamburg High School’s recent cross-country banquet, Jim Owen presented the James R. Owen Scholar/Athlete Cross Country Scholarship Award to seniors Jake Wojnicki and Leah Covelli. Owen coached Hamburg cross-country from 1968 – 2003. During his tenure, Hamburg’s former coach led Hamburg to numerous invitational meets championships and brought home a girls divisional title in 1982.
In 1999, Owen established the James R. Owen Scholarship Award, which also comes with a monetary award to be given to one or two Hamburg cross-country seniors who exhibit the Bulldog Spirit of teamwork, academic achievement, athletic ability, sportsmanship and leadership, each year. Both of this year’s award winners, Covelli and Wojnicki, are team captains. Covelli has been running varsity cross-country for six years and has consistently been on the high honor roll. Upon graduation, she said she intends to major in the culinary arts. Wojnicki has been running cross-country for all four years of his high school career, qualifying the last two seasons for the state championship meet. He also is currently ranked No. 1 in his class, academically. He said he intends to further his education by majoring in engineering.
