Orchard Park 10-and-younger Little League team’s state title run fell short, as the team represented Western New York in the state championship tournament in New York City.
Orchard Park was one of six teams left, statewide, to play for the title. The other five qualifiers were from Delmar (Tri-Village Little League), Binghamton (Maine-Endwell Little League), LaGrangeville (LaGrange Youth Baseball near Poughkeepsie), Commack (Commack South Little League) and Staten Island (Mid-Island Little League). To reach the state championship, Orchard Park won eight straight games. During this stretch, the team gave up 13 runs in eight games, while scoring 96 runs.
In the Bronx, Orchard Park lost to Tri-Village and Maine-Endwell, eliminating its championship hopes on July 25. Orchard Park finished with an 8 – 2 record, covering 1,146 miles, during its one-month journey, including spending a day touring the Big Apple. Aside from representing Western New York in the State Championship, the boys won the District 1 and the Section 1 championships.
The team was coached by Ted Phalon, Scott Schreiner and Jeff Dietrich and players included Connor Bowman, Blake Breidenstein, Griffin Dietrich, Jake Hollins, Jake Janus, Kyle Kuczewski, Connor Phalon, Colin Giancaterino, Sean Riter, Bryce Schreiner, Carson Senfield, Matt Wagner, James Vasquez and Kyle Zelasko.
