Hamburg indoor track steps into first scored meet during holidays

With but a single meet under their belt, Hamburg’s boys and girls indoor track teams headed into a scored encounter at the WNY Large School Relays. The 16-school event was held at Fredonia on Friday, Dec. 27. The Bulldogs were depleted by illness and family responsibilities during the holiday season. Nevertheless, the girls managed a ninth place finish, while the boys were 13th.

The high point of the meet came from Jake Wojnicki and Pete Rindfuss who toke first place in the 1600m run, combined time event. Both Bulldogs ran sub five minute miles while surprising several schools who simply thought they didn’t belong in the fast heat. The other Bulldog boys points came from Aric Huber and Gerhardt Hoffman in the high jump. Sharyl Santiago and Tyler Carlson just missed scoring in the hurdles with a seventh place finish as did Wojnicki, Rindfuss, Huber, and Christian Kostowniak in the Distance Medley Relay. Will Reczek and Hoffman were ninth in the shot with a strong 43’2” throw by Reczek. Other boys with strong performances included Aaron Wojnicki, Nate Robertson, Matt Hess, Liam OConnor, Preston Hoeve, Noah Conn, and Jeremy Herrington.

On the girls side, the Bulldogs scored in half the events. Hannah Fredriksen, Molly Kabsa, Rosemary Herbst, and Olivia Luthringer led off with a third place in the 3200mRelay. Kabsa, Luthringer and Herbst later teaned with Alexia Ross for a fourth place in the DMR. Amy Villarini,, Leah Covelli , Gabby LaRosa, and Fredriksen were fourth in the Doulbe 4 Lap Relay. LaRosa, Villarini, Lexi Kinsman and Fredriksen were fifth in the Sprint Medley Relay. Villarini, Kinsman, LaRosa and Lenaya Walter were sixth in the 800m Relay. Covelli and Renee Meinhold were third in Triple Jump. Meghan Haggerty and Taylor Thurnherr were fourth in Pole Vault. Other strong efforts were turned in by Libby Bassini, Megan Tramontana, and Laura Kernahan. Notably, Meinhold achieved Sectional standards in the hurdles and triple jump.

In the Bulldogs first meet at Buffalo State, Covelli made Sectional standard in the triple jump. Villarini did the same in the 55 and 300. Sam Ruszczyk qualified in the hurdles. Jake Wojnicki qualified in the 3200m run.
