Frontier closing in on football rival Hamburg

Frontier is beginning to sense a turn in the direction of the football rivalry with Hamburg.

The Falcons are inching closer to evening an all-time series in which Hamburg has never relinquished the lead, dating back to the Bulldogs’ winning 7 – 0 in the first game between the teams, in 1955.

Heading into the 2013 regular season finale, Frontier has cut into the all-time lead, which still stands in Hamburg’s favor 29 – 27– 2, despite the Falcons’ winning the rivalry game during six of the past seven seasons.

Frontier looks to get just one game from a series tie, during a 5 – 1 season in which it shut out three teams and outscored opponents 191 – 39. Hamburg, on the other hand, is 2 – 4, although the Bulldogs have been upping their game since starting with two losses.

Tim Myslinski and the Frontier coaching staff said they will not be taking their crosstown rival for granted, as the teams prepare for an Oct. 18 game at the Falcons’ home field on Bayview Road, especially with the “Battle for the `Burg” at stake.

“It doesn’t matter what anyone’s record is, when you have these huge rivalry games,” said Myslinski, whose team will also be celebrating senior night. “We could be 8 – 0 and they could be 0 – 8 or vice versa; it doesn’t matter. That game is for territory. It’s for pride.”

Though this will be the first time Pat Cauley brings his Hamburg varsity team into this game as head coach, he is familiar with the rivalry, having assisted in the program for years and headed the school’s varsity basketball team. He is now Hamburg’s athletic director.

“It’s always special when you play them and we know they’re going to be ready and we’ll be ready,” Cauley told The Sun. “That’s just how it is. They’re well-coached; I’ve been impressed with what I’ve seen. We’ll get ready to go.”

Cauley said he knows about the success Frontier has enjoyed, of late. The Falcons won their first postseason game since 1984, last season, and have gotten better this year, starting 4 – 0 and then bouncing back from a week five loss with a 31 – 0 win at Lancaster.

“It’s going to be a heck of a challenge,” Cauley said. “It’s their last game at home; it’s a rivalry – all those things. We haven’t had our direct focus on them, but we’ve been keeping our eye out on them and we know they’re good.”

The Bulldogs have won two of their last four and in, the losses, they fell by a combined 8 points to the top teams in the Class B South. The latest loss was 18 – 13 to first-place South Park. Although the playoffs are not in its future, Hamburg will continue to be a major opponent.

“It’s a new coach; they have a new attitude over there,” Myslinski said. “They are playing great. It’s going to be a long week of practice. There’s going to be some shenanigans that go into it; we know that. But it’s a big night for us.”
