Springville-Griffith Institute varsity wrestling drops first match

SPRINGVILLE — Varsity wrestling at Springville-Griffith Institute got underway on Wednesday, Nov. 28, when the Griffins hosted Lackawanna High School. The home team lost by a score of 59 – 24 to fall to 0 – 1, on the season.

During the match, Josh Ball pinned his opponent at 220 in 12 seconds and Pat O’Brien pinned at 195. Bryant Boundy and Kyle Odom both won, by forfeit.

On Saturday, Dec. 1, the boys competed at the Maple Grove Tournament, where five of Springville’s nine wrestlers placed. Bryce Szudzik, at 113, and Ball, 220, each earned fourth place finishes. Jake Smith, 138, O’Brien, 195 and Odom, 220, all finished in fifth place. Greg Benstead won a major decision 13 – 2, in his first varsity match.

A meet was scheduled on Friday, Nov. 30, but was canceled, due to an outbreak of whooping cough in the Eden team. The next home match was played on Wednesday, Dec. 5 against Alden, followed by a contest the following Friday, in Depew. The next time the wrestling team hits the floor is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 12 at 6 p.m. That game will take place at home, against Tonawanda.
