BUFFALO - Not every team gets to end the season on a high note. Unfortunately, there has to be a winner and a loser. While everybody remembers the celebration of the team that wins it all, many forget the players who go back to a silent locker room wondering what happen.

And, don’t forget the seniors, who will never put on the school colors again.

Bishop Timon-St. Jude didn’t want their season to end this way. One of the hottest teams in the Western New York Varsity Hockey Federation heading into the playoffs, the Tigers thought they had a good chance to get back to the finals for the first time in four years.

It wasn’t meant to be as rival St. Francis scored three times in the second and three times in the third period en route to an 8-1 Catholic semifinal win in front of a packed house at the Buffalo State Sports Ice Arena.

This isn’t the story on how they loss, but those seniors that sat in the silent locker room after not wanting to take the jersey off.

Still wanting one more shot at a title the school hasn’t won since 2001.

“It’s the toughest thing to do knowing that you will never put the jersey back on,” stated Timon senior Assistant Captain Mike Griffin. “But, you know that you gave it your all during your four years and you left everything out on the ice.”

This senior class never was able to experience the highs of winning of Federation Catholic or Catholic State title. The talent was there, but they just could never get over the hump – losing to St. Francis the last two years and St. Joe’s the year before.

Sometimes in the playoffs, it takes a lucky bounce here and there to get the victory.

Despite the loss, the boys should hold their heads high knowing they left everything on the ice. It just happens to be on this night the bounces went the way of the Red Raiders.

“These past four years have been the best four years of my life,” stated Griffin. “Playing hockey for Timon has been a great experience. I’m sad to let it go, but I don’t regret anything. I think the guys played the best that they could. We left everything out on the ice and we are going to look at ourselves in a good way after this.”

Timon say goodbye to 14 seniors including: Dan Fulton, Tim Ciszek, Mike Thoms, Felix Falghren, Shaun Downes, Adam Novak, Brian Gasuik, Quinn Danahy, Tim O’Donnell, Ian Daniew, Mike Griffin, Ville Timonen, Jacob Piegay and Justin Nelson.

Bounces?
It might be okay to look to game changing bounces in a one or two goal game. However, what's not okay is to say that the bounces didn't go Timon's way in an 8-1 loss. They were beat by the better team. As a Timon grad, I can see that and give Frannies credit where the credit is due. It's too bad that the author of this article can't. As a side note, I do commend the Timon seniors. Danahy and company represented themselves and the Tigers well

I did give Frannies all the credit they deserve. There are two different stories on the game. This one is more about Timon and its seniors and then there was the game stories about St. Francis.

The word Bounces shouldn't even be mentioned. It's coaching, coaching coaching, or lack thereof. Compare the credentials to frannies or Joes or other good teams. Author should put the homer soundbites aside and point out when the ongoing problem is obviously more than some bounces or calls.

Horrendous coaching decisions cost Timon any shot at success in this game. Too many players fleeing their own zone too early and too often against a team like St Francis is a recipe for disaster. The defense and the goalies obviously needeed help from the forwards but only a few helped. This was a huge problem all season.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion, and that is why I like doing what i do for a living. It is funny how everybody complains about coaching. I have been covering hockey and this team for the past 10 years and first it was Chris Panek and he didn't know how to coach. Then Pat Fisher didn't know how to coach. Now Gene doesn't know how to coach. Look at the talent St. Joe's has, they have 120 kids to choose from. Same goes for St. Francis. Nothing to take away from the boys - they are a great group of kids and I have know them for the past four years, but there is no Timmy Kennedy on this team, or Mike Scheu or Larry Broad. It's not all coaching.

The hot streak at end of season was mostly against teams with losing records. You can't keep saying the team is weak just because there's no timmy or scheu, or juniors. 8-1 is a blowout. Thin talent at school? JV with shorter bench, seemed to do pretty well: 16-2, 9 shutouts, 1st place.

Well I watched this team for four years and glad it's finally over. It is the coaching and don't even defend gene. He is no hockey coach. Look at canisius the COACH turned that team around in the middle of the season and look what happened they beat JOES. Wow amazing. YOU CAN"T ROLL 2 LINES ALL GAME AND THROW THE 3 RD IN ONCE IN AWHILE. You can see the kids faces after a 1 minute 10 sec shift dead tired. While frannie was fresh with quick changes. As far as the defense you can't let the franny kids come down and take 15 foot shots on your goalie hit the kids take them off the puck. As far as Fisher as coach he was the best coach 3 years ago the kids loved playing for him and as usual politics was in volved and he was asked to leave to bad. This school should go out and get a coach that has no ties to timon and coach the team. As far as the JV there in a week division a house team could compete in that divition. You talk about talent last year we had talent and what happened no game plan. Give it up gene and hire a new coach and maybe next year Timon will do better. Or maybe call the canisious coach and ask him what he did to beat st joes. All I can say is good luck next year.

If we had a coach with no ties to the school, half of this years kids wouldn't have made the team.

Are some of these people drunk ? Hopefully they are not Timon grads. Based on the spelling, grammar and content of their comments they are not graduates at all. Wow! As the father of one of the seniors who ended his final season, I appreciate Matt focusing on the kids and not going negative. Save all the naming names and finger pointing for the over paid pros. I hate losing as much as my son does. But to quote Quinn..."I,m over it-now let's play baseball". Joe Danahy

Why don't the finger pointing cowards who leave anonymous messages sign their names?
