Hawks fly by Chiefs in youth hockey action

HAWKS TAKE OFF — From left, Colton Hornquist and Brady Susi celebrate the Hamburg Hawks Mite victory over the Cazenovia Chiefs.
The Hamburg Hawks Mite Minor team received goals from five different players in defeating the Cazenovia Chiefs mite squad 7 – 1 on Feb. 15, at Leisure Rinks.

Evan Sullivan scored twice, including the Hawks’ only goal of the first period on assists from Matt Holst and slick defenseman Colton Hornquist. The Chiefs received strong defensive play in the opening period by Ava Kozak and Katie Mruk, but the Hawks took control of the game with three second period markers.

Braeden Griffin scored at the 7:41 mark on and assist by Jackson Antonelli followed by a goal by Sullivan off a Holst helper. The Chiefs came when Matthew Sands knocked in a rebound off a Maddie Jurusik shot at 4:28 to close the gap to 3 – 1. Defenseman Jacob Reese and Griffin teamed up for the Hawks’ fourth goal less than two minutes later to up the Hamburg lead to 4-1. The Reese and Hornquist defensive pairing was a plus-4 patrolling both ends of the ice.

In the third period, early offensive pressure by Cazenovia’s Isabella Cartonia, Pete McGowan, Luke Soto and Sam Tambachas was thwarted by Hamburg netminder Isaac Folts who turned aside all but one of the 16 shots he faced. Hailey Cooper, Rocco Panzica, Brady Greenough, and Matt Delasandro played solid defensively for Hamburg.

In the third for the Hawks, Brooke Judkiewicz scored off a set up by Brady Susi, before Holst scored his own goal on a Travis Schurr helper in advance of Reese putting up his second of the game. For the Chiefs, goaltender Allison Jurusik made nearly 30 saves against a high-octane offense that has not been held under double digits in scoring in 2014.
