St. Francis entered the Monsignor Martin playoffs on Tuesday (May 21) as hot as any team in Western New York. After opening the regular season with five losses, the Red Raiders ended it with 13 straight wins, including taking down one of the state’s top-ranked large schools Clarence 5-0 on May 15.
Included in the final week of the season was a 9-2 win over Nichols the next day and then a 10-3 victory over Timon on May 17 to end the Monsignor Martin season at 9-3 and as a third seed for the Georgetown Cup playoffs. The Red Raiders ended the regular season by winning at Dunkirk 17-7.
Against Nichols, senior Drew Bassini struck out nine and only allowed two hits over six innings. Catcher Mike Prentice recorded a three-run double and junior Matt Unger chipped in two hits. The next day, Eric Brennan finihsed with two hits and three RBI and Tom Anderson added two hits and a pair of RBI. In beating Clarence, junior Andrew Krakowski scattered five hits and struck out five in picking up the win while Prentice and Drew Bassini each had two hits.
