Fredonia State senior Jaimie Warren of Lakeview reached the 1,000-point plateau, but the women’s basketball team dropped a 77-73 game to Plattsburgh on Saturday (Jan. 25). Warren, a Frontier High School graduate, finished with 26 points, including going 10 of 10 from the line, and 15 rebounds — both game highs. It was her second straight double-double. The No. 3 ranked Juniata College men’s volleyball team swept day two of their home opening weekend, on Saturday (Jan. 25), to improve to 5-0 overall to start the season. Alex McColgin of Hamburg notched a key late-game kill in set one to set Juniata on its way to a 3-0 sweep of No. 13 Kean University. The day prior, in a 3-0 sweep of No. 14 Elmira College, McColgin finished with a match- and season-high 12 kills.Meess swims to pair of second places
Karen Meess of Hamburg swam to second-place finishes twice, with a 1:00.96 in the 100-yard backstroke and 2:13.56 in the 200 backstroke, as the University of Rochester women’s swimming and diving team competed in its final home meet of the season. The Yellowjackets fell to 5-4 on the season with a 125-175 loss to Ithaca on Jan. 18. The Frontier High School graduate also swam on the winning 200-yard medley relay, which finished in 1:48.88.Hilbert spikers go 3-1 at SUNYIT
The Hilbert College men’s volleyball team is working on a three-game winning streak, for the first time in this year’s senior class’ four-year career, after they breezed through the Gold Bracket in the SUNYIT Invitational Tournament on Saturday (Jan. 25) to improve to 3-3 overall. The Hawks had split their opening day matches at the 12-team invitational on Jan. 24.
Senior Adam Weaver returned to the head of the class in Division III men’s volleyball. The senior outside hitter finished with 49 kills (8.17 kills per set) on the day. Weaver was the primary target for first-year setter Adam Heftka, while Korey Schwab and Ryan Ratajczak were also playmakers. On day one, Weaver finished with 35 kills, 4 service aces and 5 solo blocks and Ratajczak picked up where he left off last year, getting credit for 4.12 digs per set (33 total). David Mellerski finished with 16 digs and junior Adam Duncan added 5 blocks. Heftka set for 54 assists.Hilbert women win second AMCC game
The Hilbert College women’s basketball claimed its second win in three games in a 69-54 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory over Franciscan University on Jan. 26. Kylie Reinholz led all scorers with 18 points, helping push Hilbert’s AMCC record to 2-9 and 3-14 overall.
Hilbert’s Haley Oakes continued her strong shooting, knocking down 3 of her 4 attempts at the 3-point line for 13 points, while Natalie Whitman and Emily Speidel added 11 each. Whitman also grabbed 15 rebounds, her eighth time this season pulling down double-figure boards. Recently, Whitman scored her 1,000 collegiate point, from the foul line late in a 67-60 loss to visiting D’Youville College, 67-60, on Jan. 22. Whitman finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds, earning her 10th double-double this season. D’Youville’s Alexis Smith of Hamburg led all scorers with 21 points and 9 rebounds. The game prior, Hilbert beat Penn State Behrend, 58-47.
