Hamburg H.S., Ithaca alumni meet by chance

John Thomas and Keith Vantine, both Hamburg High School and Ithaca College graduates met by chance at the college’s Alumni Weekend in October. Thomas was attending because the 1962 baseball team he played for, which advanced to the College World Series in Omaha after being one of eight teams to win a regional title, was being inducted into the IC Hall of Fame. Van Tine, who played football at Ithaca from 1974-77 after starring as an athlete at Hamburg, was attending his 35th reunion and met up with a number of former teammates to watch the current IC football team defeat Alfred. Van Tine, who still resides in Western New York, earned his Doctorate in Educational Administration and served 22 years as a school superintendent in various districts. Thomas taught health and physical education and coached soccer for most of his 30-plus years at Hamburg. He relocated to South Carolina.
