HAWKS ARE CHAMPS — The Hamburg Hawks celebrate after winning the Rock and Roll Cup Tournament in Cleveland.
The Hamburg Hawks traveled to Cleveland, over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend, and returned home victorious after capturing the coveted “Rock and Roll Cup” Tournament. The Hawks won three out of four tournament games en route to the championship. The team used solid two-way play, along with timely goaltending on its way to hoisting the silverware.
The only blemish on the weekend occurred in a loss to the tenacious Highland Park Falcons, 1-0. Despite the loss, the Hawks qualified for the championship game against the same Columbus team. The Hawks’ defense was even better than in the qualifying round, holding the Blue Jackets to less than a dozen shots on the way to a 7 – 1 win. Keegan O’Connor, Jeremy Marszalek and Bryan Solinski each scored two goals, while Jordan Rusin added one goal.
The Hawks opened the tournament dispatching the Bud Bakewell Bruins 6 – 2. Rusin, Ryan Thompson, Owen Bean, Marszalek, Solinski and Josh Cook all scored for Hamburg. Earning the win in goal was Colin Witman. In game two, the Hawks soared to a 7 – 2 win against the Columbus Bluejackets. Solinski led all scorers with 2 goals, along with single tallies from Thompson, Anthony Obrochta, Ryan Coffman, Josh Kuebler and Marszalek. Witman and Joe Lotempio split time between the pipes in the win.
The Hawks returned to league play with their sights set on a WNYAHL playoff berth.
