SPRINGVILLE — The Springville-Griffith Institute varsity football team got its first win of the season, with a 14 – 13 victory against Pioneer Central School, at Pop Warner Field on Friday, Sept. 28.
Pioneer came into the game undefeated and ranked in the top 10 of the Western New York power rankings, by The Buffalo News.
Coming off several losses in recent weeks, the Griffs gave their fans a victory on homecoming night. S-GI fell behind early 7 – 0, but rallied, to tie the game, on a 14-yard touchdown run by quarterback Bill Dickinson. Dickinson finished the game with 120 yards rushing for the Griffs.
Coach John Sopko said that his team’s execution was vital. “We were certain it would come down to our option execution, particularly our quarterback Billy Dickinson, who had a tremendous game,” he said.
The Griffins added to their lead on a 24-yard touchdown, run by Tyler Conklin, which made the score 14 – 7 for S-GI.
Playing in his first game since being called up from junior varsity, sophomore Bryce Stedman stepped in at center and played against the run defense.
“As it turned out, he played very well and Bryce received the Alumni Throwback Player of the Week award Saturday, from the alumni,” Sopko said.
S-GI held on, for the 14 – 13 win against its rival, Pioneer, to improve the team’s record to 1 – 4, on the season.
Sopko has been selected as the Buffalo Bill’s National Guard WNY high school coach of the week. The Buffalo Bills came to Springville’s practice on Monday, Oct. 1 for a photo and an interview.
Sopko said that his team is already looking forward to taking on its next opponent. “We will begin to implement our game plan for Dunkirk today,” he said.
“We will watch film, practice and work to improve our execution this week, while working to maintain our conditioning.”
The Griffins will look to make it two wins in a row, when they travel to take on Dunkirk’s team on Friday, Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
