Just two days after suffering the side’s first league loss of the season, the Hamburg Monarchs 12-and-under boys soccer team bounced back with a 3-1 victory over the visiting West Seneca Edge on June 1 at the Hamburg Nike Base fields.
The match was a defensive struggle for the first half as combination plays by Gabe Mastrangelo, Kyle Ingraham, and Jared Rasinski came close to the mark but could not reach fruition. Matt Clifford kept the West Seneca attack at bay with his tenacious display of defense with help from his teammates Ryan Sutton, Nick Sobczak, Isaiah O’Connor and keeper Andrew Lauria. Frustrated, the squads ended the first half in a 0-0 stalemate.
The scoreless tie remained until nearly halfway through the second frame until Josh Kacalski put a free kick from about 20 yeards out into the back of the net. Strong play at midfield by Mike Lange and Will McGowan kept the ball in the attacking third.
The Edge quickly snapped back to answer Hamburg with a goal of their own to tie the game at 1-1 in the 56th minute. Just two minutes later, the Monarchs responded by putting pressure on the West Seneca back line and creating a corner kick. Jonah Kozak delivered the ensuing corner near the head of Mastrangelo who did the rest. The Monarchs continued to control the play and upped their lead to 3-1 as Seth Heeter buried a Kacalski pass in the 65th minute.
After a bye week, the Monarchs travel to Amherst to face the Galaxy on June 10 at Paradise Park.
