Youth Baseball: Lake View Legends open with pair of wins

The Lake View Legends 10-and-under team opened their season with two impressive wins during the first weekend in May. On Saturday, they beat the Cheektowaga Spartans, 4-3, and the next day, upended Fredonia 12-3.

Down by one going into their last at bat, the Legends rallied for the win. Jacob Kleese laid down a walk-off squeeze bunt to score Sean Dlugosz with the winning run. The pitching staff was anchored by Dan Dlugosz and Alex Monaco, who combined to throw four scoreless innings to start the game, while striking out six. Defensive stars were Jacob Donaldson and Declan Wyman—each making spectacular plays in the field. Lake View broke through with two runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Kyle Jarosz and Sean Dlugosz recorded two hits and scored twice.

Against Fredonia, Lake View’s pitchers recorded 10 of the 18 outs via the strikeouts, and offensively, recorded 15 hits — with each batter reaching base at least once. Russell Donaldson blew the game open with a clutch two-run single. Kleese, Mark Lanning, Jacob Donaldson, Dan Dlugosz, and Jarosz all had multiple hits on the day.

The Lake View Legends built a large lead on Sunday (May 12), but lost it in the frigid conditions against Nickel City. Dan Dlugosz, the defensive player of the game, and Alex Monaco stood out on the mound. Alex Dzimian led the offense with two hits and three RBI. The loss drops the Legends to 2-1 in the Southtowns Travel League. They’ll look to rebound against Holland this weekend.

In 9-and-under action, the Lake View Lightning improved to 2-1 this season with a 24-1 win on May 12 over Eden at Legion Field. In blistery conditions, Cole Eckman struck out five and received the defensive medal for his efforts. Justin Coyne, the offensive player of the game, went 3 for 3 and had four RBI. Markus Stahlka and Nick Schulz both doubled with three RBI to help the Lightning’s attack. They travel to Springville this weekend and look to keep their bats hot.
