The Buffalo Seniors squad exhibited its dominance over Rochester in running away with a 9-0 win to help the region win the Scotty Bowman Cup for the seventh time in nine years. The ninth annual Scotty Bowman Showcase was played on Monday (April 15) at First Niagara Center.
Frontier High School’s Bob Piotrowicz gave a two-goal performance for the Buffalo Seniors squad. He was one of six players recording multiple points for Buffalo’s all-stars, which scored eight times in the third period. Aiding the cause for the Buffalo Seniors was St. Francis High School’s Tyler McTigue, who added a goal in the win. Hamburg’s Chris Moses also played for the Senior team from Buffalo.
The juniors/prep school team from Buffalo also won in the final of three showcase games against Rochester that night, earning a 3-2 victory. Blasdell’s Bob Bloomfield, a goalie, played on that team, representing the Buffalo Junior Sabres 18-and-under team.
Rochester’s only win of the night came in the Junior game, 4-1. Locals playing on that Buffalo squad included Hamburg forwards Colin Coppola and Brendan McFall and Frontier defenseman Alex Buczek.
Elsewhere in hockey news, the East Coast Militia premier summer travel hockey team will feature a few Western New York players competing at the Worlds Select Invite in Maine this weekend. The 1998 Majors team includes forward Matt Jakobowski, who played with the Hamburg Hawks organization, and goalie Tyler Johnson of the Buffalo Regals.
They will compete against some of the best teams in the world, from countries such as Russia, Sweden, Czech Republic, Austria, Latvia, Canada, Finland and the US.
