Hilbert College’s director of intercollegiate athletics Susan Viscomi has accepted the same position at SUNY Oswego. Viscomi will finish the remainder of the academic year at Hilbert. A national search for her replacement has already begun.
One of the most significant accomplishments under Viscomi’s guidance was last month when men’s basketball earned its first-ever Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference regular season title and hosted the AMCC tournament for the first time. Last year, the Hawks went to the conference playoffs for the first time in men’s soccer and women’s volleyball.
Since Viscomi took over the Hilbert program in July 2010, the full-time staff has doubled in size and the athletics’ facilities have seen several upgrades. Additionally, Viscomi oversaw the addition of men’s and women’s lacrosse at Hilbert.
“Sue came to Hilbert with a large task in front of her and she became the transformative leader that our athletic department needed,” Hilbert College president Cynthia Zane said. “Her tenure has shown success both on and off the playing field and courts...I wish Sue success in her new opportunity, but we will also miss her talents at Hilbert.”
Viscomi was also a member of the WNY Consortium of Higher Education’s Women’s Leadership Institute Class of 2012, which helps prepare women for higher education senior leadership positions. The Women’s Leadership Institute is designed to discuss the complexity of issues facing higher education.
“We accomplished quite a bit in my time at Hilbert, but Cynthia’s strong advocacy for growing the athletics department was paramount to that success,” Vscomi said.
